Winsor and newton series 7 online to USA?
« on: May 05, 2014, 04:08:59 PM »
These brushes are getting very hard-to-find in United States thanks to a direct sales ban. I'm looking to order some from Britain or Europe.  Does anyone know a reliable online retailer who carries a good stock of these and will ship to the USA?

Thanks

Ax

Didn't know about a ban until I Googled this: Importing Kolinsky Sable. Amazon does offer a few, probably reducing stock.

the range has them in the uk, not sure if they ship over seas.

We have a good shop here in Leicester that has a great range of high end brushes, they're a family store and im sure they'd negotiate sending you some if you wanted some very high end stuff.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

I use to buy my art supplies online  here http://www.jacksonsart.com/
They have W&N series 7
I'm based in Spain, so, I assume they ship worldwide

The problem is if they are intercepted by postal employees who are paying attention to the federal ban they are going to be confiscated and (most likely) destroyed plus there may be legal ramifications for the person ordering them.

You roll the dice and you take your chances...

What about getting someone to ship them to you as a gift?

If you want to order them for delivery to a UK address and have them cunningly disguised and shipped on to you then send me a PM.  ;)

I'm asking merely for my ignorance and don't want to start a fire, but to me banning a brush sounds a kind of silly, what's exactly the subject of the ban? the brand windsor & newton? the kind of hair used in the brush? its a protectionist measure to protect the brush industry in the US?

The animal that the brush hairs are from (Siberian Weasel) is listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
All shipments must be accompanied by paperwork (it is a government thing - probably in triplicate).
There has been screw ups in paperwork from Chinese exporters and therefore member nations are not allowed to import any products

of course, it would be impossible to mass produce brushes using wild hair.

like canned buffalo tongue would be impossible to have with wild harvesting or Koala fur hats or beaver coats or whale skin hubcaps.... Never hurts to ask.

Bison today in the USA is 'farmed' like cattle so sometimes the answer is yes.  Trapping doesn't mandate eliminating a species...

That aside, the point is that this appears to be a matter of bureaucracy and paper work.  Whether the Chinese were inefficient or trying to hide something (I choose to believe it was the former until proven) they brought this on us by their actions/inactions.

Too bad I need some new brushes...

Gracias,

Glenn

Not really, I use brushes made from the fur of caged weasels. I'm sure weasel shaving is not fun for the shaver of weasels or the weasels themselves. (if they are not just killed and skinned.)

They are killed and skinned. The problem with shearing live weasels would be that the hairs' natural taper is part of what makes a good brush (especially the wee fine point types we like). Shave your weasel once, and the next, "crop" will be mostly follicles with blunt ends.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

And no one likes a blunt ended weasel.
