Night parade of 100 demons
« on: June 16, 2014, 02:31:38 AM »
Thought this book may be of interest to some of you, espeically those interested in japanese folklaw. It contains descriptions of many demons/yokai from Japanese folklore including things like oni and kappa as some possibly lesser known yokai like the Karakasa which is an umbrella that likes to surprise people by licking them with it's massive tounge. Some really nice illustrations in the book so if you are getting the digital version which is very cheap I highly recommend you do it for a kindle that has colour display or read it on your laptop or tablet as the illustrations are the highlight.

Amazon link not sure if it's available elsewhere: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Parade-One-Hundred-Demons/dp/0985218401

Does anyone know of any other good books about Japanese myths and legends?

Very cool book indeed. For some reason 'Yokai culture' has really caught on in the western world, over the last couple years. There's several great books on the subject that came out recently- I'll post links when I get home. CP models even has some possessed inanimate objects :)

Edit: I like these ones:

I think I might just pick that up  :)

I do prefer the more sedate, traditional versions of the oni etc as opposed to the over detailed, world destroying types that are prevalent in gaming at the moment.

Can't remember anything about pictures, but there is Yokai Attack! which is a pretty good one. There's a pretty good interview with the authors and researchers behind it with the September 12, 2012 Monster Talk episode, if you listen to podcasts...

I some times listen to them when I am painting. Usually they are Bjj or MMA ones but that sounds really interesting.

I've enjoyed Monster Talk, and it's largely a more sane discussion on Cryptid related things and more of the science or history connected to it. One of the great ones is one of the first ones they did where it was with a geneticist about how the DNA processing and analysis actually works...

Thanks to this post I've just bought a copy of 'Night Parade' - it's a lovely book with wonderful illustrations. Well worth the money imho!
