Grand Alliance stuff updated 28/5
« on: May 08, 2014, 02:38:19 AM »
Hi all
its bin a while since previous posts but as I am now painting for a living
I have decided to show the collections I am doing for myself as they progress.
below are the two armies I am working on first.
They are Allied and French forces for the Wars of the Grand Alliance and the figures are from Dixon and Foundry.

As you can see from the pictures above I undercoat my figures in the most common colours and I put them on to the final bases with a little wood glue to get the effect.
Then I re-base then individually when I am ready to paint as they snap off very easily from the wood glue.
I have already decided on the forces I will have as seen below and I have gone for colour all in all.

These pictures show how far I have got so far and as you can see I have started with the Allied army , so as I do more in this collection I will add to this thread until the lot are finished I hope.....

ooh Nice Stuff :o

Its a period I really like
We use it as a basis for semi-fictional Imagi-nation forces.
We use 36 man Infantry regiments and 24 strong Cavalry regts

Holy-schmoley  :o :o :o
That's a lot of lead!
Good luck with it. It would take me about 3 years to get through that lot  :)

Lovely stuff! But are you sure about the colours of the French & Swiss Guards? I thought Gardes Francaises wore blue tunics faced with red, and Gardes Suisse wore Red tunics faced with blue?

I already posted the info below on the Steve Dean forum but you can never have too much uniform pedantry  ;)

Yes, the Gardes Françaises had switched to royal blue coats faced red with white buttonhole lace by the time the Nine Years Wars broke out. They had worn grey coats with grey cuffs and silver lace throughout the 1670's and the early 1680's, until Louis XIV decided to have them clad in the royal colours or blue and red in October 1684 : this was quickly implemented since the men paraded before the king in their new uniforms in March 1685.

The Swiss Guards had blue cuffs, not yellow ones, and their red coats also sported white lace (the only Swiss regiment known to have worn red coats faced yellow was Reynold between 1692 and 1702). The Régiment du Roi most likely had blue stockings : no surviving period source mentions red stockings, though the unit had yellow/orange buttonhole lace on the coat.

Finally, Tessé Dragons no longer existed in 1689 (well, there was another Tessé dragoon regiment until 1692 but it was a different unit with a different uniform) : the regiment had become Mestre de Camp Général in 1685 and was re-clothed that year in red coats faced blue - though facings appear to have changed to red by 1698. But the yellow coat faced red is too tempting to pass, I guess.

At which point our good Captain will probably say ' who cares as long as the paint jobs look good'  ;)

If you are referring to the Osprey MAA on the armies of Louis XIV, this is actually a pretty good painting guide. René Chartrand is a solid researcher and knows his stuff when it comes to French ancien régime subjects. His uniform info relies on period documents only rather than dubious 19th century second-hand accounts.
