Never planned to go there...
« on: May 09, 2014, 01:32:51 PM »
The new greens on the Pikes, Muskets, and Flouncy Shirts sub-forum - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=66565.0 - caused me to think about how many times people start periods/genres (or say they are going to start) because they see a figure in  a period they had not planned to make a part of their collection and - Boom - they find a need to buy an army/force because of the figure(s) they saw.

Off the top of my head I have never had that happen but a few times periods/genres I was "on the edge" of committing to start have been tipped from, "Maybe," to, "Heck, yes!" by some great figures.

What about you?

Gracias,

Glenn

I've got a primed unpainted Persian army I can't seem to sell because of that sort of thing.

I usually have no plan at all. I go wherever the miniatures OCD takes me.

I have a general rule with myself that to limit the size of my collection I will only buy mins if I'm interested in the genre and they have nice miniatures available.

I have just enough self control to exercise this policy apparently, but it still leaves me with plenty of unpainted models and dusty rulebooks.

I tend to restrict myself to miniatures that I can directly see being of use in at least one rule set I am "playing" (read, planning on playing mostly) The more games it might fit into the better the chance I might get it. If finding a use would be a strain then I try not to think further about them.
'T is the reason I resisted supers for so long before the new supersystem playtest gave me a taste of the rules.

I've bought a few figures I'm sure I probably won't use, but I only buy figures that I conceivably "could" use. I play Pulp/Interwar skirmish as well as fantasy, so if it doesn't fit those I have to admit to myself I'm buying a figure just because it looks supremely cool (this has happened only 3 or 4 times, such as with Kev White's goblinaid angry chav gobbo).

THIS!!!

Why DID I click the link?

You'll find my rationalization somewhere on Page Two...

I'll confess to being a returning gamer, 30 years past, long ago lost that lead pile, and trying to avoid recreating it...

I foolishly thought I'd found focus by limiting my acquisitions to characters suitable for Pulp Alley ONLY...

Now I find myself a Pulp butterfly, with potential leagues on ALL the warm continents, & most oceans.

& Now I'm going to Afrika?  With Wimmen?  Inconceivable...

I must find a better method of navigation...

As the Wise Old Master Sergeant said "Lack of focus WILL f..., uh,  mess us up"

He was a tad pithier in his recitation as you may well imagine.
