Royal Navy 1970's Dr. Who
« on: May 10, 2014, 11:16:23 AM »
Joyously and foolishly, I have been watching 'The Sea Devils' eps from Third Doctor era(thanks Horror channel!).

Just got to the last episode where Royal Navy personal assault beach from a hovercraft - it looks ace!

So, as I have figures for UNIT and Counter Measures already (Army and RAF), can anyone suggest where I can get figures in shirt sleeves and puttees toting SLR/FN FAL?

Only seems fair if the Doctor has support from ALL the services!

Been thinking about gaming that one myself too.

Commando Miniatures and Eureka Miniatures both produce British Army in shirtsleeve order for Aden, Borneo, etc., so they might work with a suitable head swap.

Regiment Games did produce a WWII Naval Landing Party that included an officer or two that might work, but I think they have now closed and I don't know if anyone picked up those particular figures. Pulp Figures do a pack of Royal Navy Deck Crew, but the officer is in tropical rig, though there is an officer or CPO type in the equivalent American pack in a collar and tie.

The more important question though is where to find a suitable figure for 3rd Officer Blythe?

There aren't a lot of minis of women in real-life British-style uniforms around.

Crooked Dice has WPC Cathy Black: http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/product/tough-detectives/

And Killer B also has a WPC: http://www.killerbgames.com/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=35

The WPC hat might be easier to convert to a WREN one than the ATS cap worn by Artizan's Driver Sally Haines: http://www.artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1693

Ainsty's female St John Ambulance (or Traffic Warden) figure has trousers: http://ainstycastings.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/69/products_id/740

Oh, and an officer in my old rig, No. 2 uniform?

Again, a possible starting point might be the 1960s/70s police figures from Crooked Dice, Ainsty or Killer B.

Edit: I forgot that Warm Acre's Rachael Knight is avaiable in a more formal uniform, as well as commando gear: http://www.warmacre.com/shop/brigidier-berkeley-and-rachael-knight/

I think that the easy way to paint a WREN is the crooked dice female PC, Their hats are similar.

BTW there are a couple more female Police constables available in the GEEZERS range:

Ooh shiny! I really must have some of those. Handy for Borneo and a few other things. Thanks for the heads up.

There's some footage of RN types in working dress as part of Operation Sheepskin, the Gilbert and Sullivan like British Aid to the Civil Power ops on Anguilla in 1969 on the IWM site. It's about four and a half minutes in.

http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1060020586

I used to have some photos bookmarked of Op Sheepskin that showed RN landing party types but damned if I can find them now the bookmarks went west with my old laptop. The only thing I would say about those figures is that they could do with one or more pouches for their magazines. Easily fixed with some of the pouches from TAG.

Nice looking minis, can't wait for the command pack.

They could be useful for W79 wargaming. Would be nice to have someone else other than the British army shooting each other.

This is a real gap in the market. US too, and not just medics (as in the modern Empress range) If I had sufficient cash spare....  :(
