Fly Gundam!
« on: May 11, 2014, 01:44:53 AM »
I've been painting up a few Mobile Suits for a demo game at the Plastic Model Expo in Melbourne in June. I found some rules for them years ago online that convert 3rd Ed 40K and they play ok. I figure the Gundam modelers could get a kick out of it.

GM in Space Combat Colours, nice and dirty from seeing action on the ground.

Zaku II from a desert battlegroup.

Zaku II Command Type with a Beam Lance.

I'm hoping to have 6 Mobile Suits done for the game, I'm painting a GM Sniper at the moment, then I'll do a RX-78 and a Gouf Custom. I have more waiting for paint, but I don't think that they'll be done in time.

While not a big Gundam fan (much more into Macross/VOTOMS) I always like seeing some mecha painted up.  Lovely stuff.

Very nice. I started a Gundam gaming project some years ago, but didn't really make anything of it (except for a couple of Zakus and amphibious units, but now I found that a reasonably-local store stocks Tomica 1/150 building kits - pricey, but great for any 10mm/144 modern/near future stuff, and most cities in (UC) Gundam look late-20th century, anyway.

Judging from the poses, are those the old (1970s-80s) kits? Bit of a pain to get those looking right. I definitely prefer the new HGUC offerings, especially if you can order them directly from HLJ without some of the more ridiculous markups some importers demand.

The GM is an older kit, the Zakus newer kits, all from HLJ. They're the LG (Low Grade) 1/144 kits, which are cheaper and easier to deal with than the much nicer HG (High Grade). As they'll be used for gaming rather than display, the quality isn't such a big deal to me.

Excellent stuff. I have a few 1/144 Gundams, but for now I'll be exploring the SD range a bit.

What's in store next for this project?
Too many projects... not enough time...

The GM Sniper is almost done, then another Zaku before I finish with the RX-78.

Down the track there may be more, but not anytime soon.

Excellent choices. I would recommend the Gelgoog and the Gun Tank for being awesome.

And WHO doesn't want a Dom?  :)

I already have a Gelgoog, a Gouf and a couple more RX-78s, I'd love a Dom, Guntank, Guncannon, Gogg, Z-Gock and a couple of EZ-8's, but they don't come up often in the 1/144 LG on HLJ.

Have you seen the Gundam STANDart
http://www.bandai.co.jp/candy/gundam/standart/
or the Gundam Assault Kingdom lin?
http://www.bandai.co.jp/candy/gundam/assaultKingdom/

Found them when DZT showed off his new Gundam Converge on TMP. I got one STANDart and two Assault Kingdom Gundams looking for the Converge ones at Barns and Nobles. I haven't popped them from their boxes yet but the size of the boxes make me think that possibly they could be as of use to you.

The Assault Kingdom minis are a lot smaller - the Z'Gok I have from Release 4 is about 8cm tall (compared to the 13-ish cm of the 1/144 kits).

Weirdly, I've just finished a trio of Zaku 1 snipers to use as mecha in scifi games at 28mm.  Must be something about the Zaku...

They're my first Gundam, and I'm ridiculously pleased by them.  I went for the High Grade kits, so they took about an hour each to build.  For £13 each, direct from Japan, you get a fully articulated 5" model in coloured plastic.  They go together like a dream too.

Still got to weather them, which I may get round to some time in the summer.  I'd be happy putting them on my table now though.

I haven't opened mine as i was planning on taking them back. But being about 8cm or a bit over 3in i may change my mind. I am also having an issue on how with what to use a Z'Gok as well.

Just to keep it all straight. The Zaku 1 snipers you refer to, they from the Assault Kingdom line or another line? If another which line? And yes, there is something about a Zaku kit.

Indeed. The Zaku is very iconic. Often I find the Zeon Mobile Suits more... hmm.. stylish, compared to the Federation ones.

Sorry my mistake - Bandai 1/144 Zaku snipers.  This one:

Since our chat this morning, I'm back home to complete some work here - I'll get some pics to you tomorrow Grim, and put in the Z'gok too... and my only other Gundam, a super-deformed Asshimar.

Oh and Hat Guy?  Nice models!

Finished this last night:

GM Sniper.

I've considered the collectible figures and action figures in the past for this project as they look a bit nicer, but I've never found a good supplier for either.
