SD Gundam Offline
« on: May 19, 2014, 02:53:30 PM »
I've been a Mecha junkie for as long as I can remember. Battletech, Robotech, Votoms and the list goes on and on. In resent years I've grown fund of the Gundam Mobile Suits and the stories from that Univers.

While researching the possibilities of making my own game using gundam models, I came across an online game called SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online:

http://sdgo.ogplanet.com/en/main.og

I fell head over heals in love with the little SD (Super Deformed) suits and wanted to explore that road instead of the 1/144 models I started collecting.

Trwling ebay I found a host of SD Gundam models, but often the scale (within the same range) was widely different from each other, but finally I came across the Gashapon Next line:

I've started to put together a ruleset, that suits my needs and hopefully captures the essence of Gundam and Gundam Capsule Fighter Online.

The rules are based on a mix of X-Wing and more traditional wargames. The Mobile suits will be using Square bases like this:

I've created a unit Card for a Zaku II Mobile Suit for starters:

P:Piloting Skill
A: Attack
D: Defense
H: Hull Points
M: Movement Points

Piloting Skill determines order of movement, actions  and shooting as in X-Wing.

Attack is the number of dice (D6) used to attack.

Modifiers:
Target in Left/Right side arc: -1D
Attacking target Rear: +1D
Attacking at optimal range: +1D (1 range band fra optimal er normalt, 2 range bands fra optimal er -1D - der findes Close/Medium/Long range bands)
Target Obscured: -1D

Defence is the number of Dice (D6) used defend against enenmy attack.

Hull Points is the number of damage points the unit can sustain before being destroyed.

Movement point is the number of points the unit can spend on moving around the battlefield:

Forward move up to 3" = 1MP
Turn up to 90 degrees = 1 MP
Rear/Side move up 3" = 1 MP
Boost across obstacle up to 3" (forward move only) = 2MP

Fighter Type (the fist NeXT to the Mobile suit Picture) is used to determine what range is optimal for that particular mobile suit. Fist is Close range, Scissors is Medium range and paper is long range.

A Zaku II is an older serial produced mobile suit, so it will more or less be the least effective mobile suit. In comparison a RX78-2 Gundam will have Att:4 og Def:4 wich is really good, but in the low end of the more powerfull gundams.

Add to this a host of skills, actions, wargear and perhaps event Cards/markers and off we go. :-)

Stay tuned for more.

They're a bit of an aquired taste. Some love them, some think they're silly.

I've added some Black lining to one of my Zakus:

Picks out the details and make the model a lot cooler imo. I've ordered a bunch of N-Scale Buildings for scenary. It might not fit they scale perfectly, but that's the beauty of SD models. They don't really have a proper scale.

Lining in black, or even a few other colours if you want to go really advance can very much improve the look of a regular gundam figure that much I know. Hadn't even thought about it also applying to gashapon SD's.

I was under the impression that the SD model kits were in the same scale with eachother?

Sadly no. The Next models are a bit bigger than other Gashapon ones.

And I originally started collecting the G-range (not Gashapon) and to my horror I soon dicovered that the difference in size was... well... quite substational.

Here's a Gundam and a Gelgoog not only from the same range, but also from the same set:

I'm not picky usually, but that didn't sit right with me.

Great idea! I've never been fond of the SDs, but they're looking good here.

Yep. Fingers crossed I have the stamina to see this one through.  ;)

I finally got a big bag of Square 40mm bases, so my Mobile Suit are getting ready to deploy:

Very cool, I've always had a soft-spot for SD/deformed stuff...(yes, mainly Robotech).  I'm not a huge Gundam fan but that game could be a riot.  Looks like it could be a fun convention game as well.

Brilliant.  I bought a load of train scenery to use for monster gaming.  It looks very nice.

@Elbows: Yep. I'm hoping to turn this into a convention game. It should be fairly easy to learn and should be played in a relative short time period.

@Dr. The Viking: Brilliant use for the railroad houses too. :-)

I got a few more houses and added a Little of my generic terrain for some better Pictures:

I'm still working on the game mechanics as Movement planning is a pretty big part of X-wing and I have excluded it in my game. Could be a huge advantage for the High Piloting skill models, and I'm still contemplating have to balance this.

Looks nice!

I got a big bunch of Gashapons (not SD ones though) thinking I'd build a game around them, but the selection is a bit problematic. Since Gundam is the hero of the show, you get piles and piles of them and way too few "basic" MS like Zakus or GMs. There's also a high percentage of goofy close combat weapons instead of good old beam guns.

Too many chiefs and too few indians...

Besides, I stll haven't built that supercarrier they are supposed to fight on...

Ugh, I feel your pain Maxxon --- absolutely hate when toy lines do that (though it kinda/sorta makes sense I'm sure from a business perspective).  Robotech and Votoms are both examples - impossible to find bad guy models/figures, but there are bajillions of "good guys".  Annoying indeed!
