28mm FIW BIG MUSKETS AND TOMAHAWKS GAME
« on: May 24, 2014, 07:55:21 PM »
On Thursday I went to Hugh Wilson’s for our big Muskets and Tomahawks game.  Hugh had converted his Vietnam river terrain into a FIW wonderland with a British fort, a port with a sailing ship, 5 settlements and an Indian village and lots of canoes and boats.  The table is 14ft long and 5ft wide.

View over the table from the eastern escarpment

Bart Zynda, Donald Adamson,  Tim Watson, and Ray Neal commanded the British and Colonial forces – 3 regular units, 3 ranger units, 6 militia units plus 5 civilians in each settlement.  Colin Jack, Campbell Hardie, Dave o’Brien and Hugh Wilson commanded the French forces – 2 Regular units, 3 Irregular units, 3 allied Indians and 3 savage Indians.   I umpired.  The French objective was to destroy the settlements, fort, port and generally instil terror into their enemy.  The British were all deployed on the table and the French entered from the north side.

View over the fort – militia deployed in the forest

British regulars deployed at the fort

Lovely game.
It has everything one could want,
but a British victory. ;)

I've always like the look of Colonial American wilderness games although I've only ever played one game earlier this year (in 30+ years of wargaming).
Looks great.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Very nice game!

Having limited space at home i just don't bother with stuff like this  :'(

You need room and much scenery to do it justice, like you did!!

Last week we setup a follow up FIW game.  I altered the forces slightly and we amended the terrain to include more open ground and reduce the size of the river.  I replaced the log fort with a Vauban fortress.

View from the cliff end of the table.  Fortress to the left.  French appear from right edge.

French indian allies and Coureur Des Bois advance to engage some British Indians and settlers.  Fortress in the background.

It proved to be another French victory.  More photos and information at my blog

I am really impressed with the terrain, particularly how the various land parts are placed over the bodies of water, which makes it look realistic. Also, the sundry items like ships, boats, caches, boxes etc. add so much realism to the terrain.

Visually stunning! Many thanks for sharing you report and photos.  :)

Many thanks for sharing the photos!

I also love large games and 14 ft is just WOW!

I've got 2, 6 ft x 12 ft tables but to do 14 ft I'd have to build an extension to the house!

Did you make the Vauban fort yourself? It does look rather splendid.

Cheers,

Paul

The Vauban Fort was originally produced by Ian Weekly in the 1970s and is now sold by Magister Militum - check their 28mm Vaubanesque range.   I painted it only in the last 3 months.  I need to come up with a scenario to allow us to use the 9 pieces that we have between us.
