Brave new worlds - Hover AFV pics 13th July 2014
« on: June 08, 2014, 05:51:45 PM »
Contrary to my signature, I just managed to finish a project, a tiny 2000 point force for Net Epic Armageddon. No pics, as I was busy literally scraping the bottom of the barrel (well tub) of pva glue to get the bases done - so maybe it didn't really happen.  ???
But it's true  :P

Seeing I haven't finished a modelling project in years, I guess it's time to celebrate by focusing - yes, a newly-learnt skill (ha!) - on a new one, a Fantasy Island sort of project, in which you can live out any fantasy. Any wargaming fantasy. Oh all right, I just mean a gaming surface for all seasons, with different themes juxtaposed next to each other. Doesn't make sense unless you look at it as a sort of theme park with the different settings spilling over onto each other. Think surreal.

The themes will include:
My Brazil (Terry Gilliam, not world cup) project
A Jodorowsky Dune theme (I did say surreal)
Champion City (for superheroes, and villians too; from The Mystery Men)
Pepperland (from the Yellow Submarine)
Grimdark (for Necromunda and 40K)
A desert Deadzone-furnished area.

Whilst horribly messy, it will tie up several loose ends and models, and allow me wide leeway to go off at as many tangents as I wish - and also use some finished models without rebasing, as I will have areas of different colour (grey, brown, sand, raku and grass zones).

Purists beware, this will conform to no strict theme.
Rules: anything goes, including 7TV, Pulp Alley, Necromunda, 40K, Deadzone etc.
There may even be zombies....

Phase 1: my first Brazil base (already in progress) and a first force 0 but which? I am tending to an Army force, suitable for superhero style games, based on AT43 walkers for the backbone. And the odd super...
Purchases - I made two in two days - more when they get here.

Sounds interesting vanvlak, I'm keen to see how it turns out as I like the versatile nature of it, and the inbuild beauty of a fixed board.

Carry on.

Guys, you do know that my projects are famous for never getting done (although I have just spoilt that track record) and that they advance slower than a glacier?
I DO however have one large section which is quite advanced (but which I have to take pics of still).

There is one issue I am in a quandary about - I am thinking of having thin 'transition zones' between the different board areas, and have had 3 different ideas so far:
1) perimeter walls, or fences, with gates in them to allow vehicles to cross (once breached) - these would be mounted on narrow bases located between the larger areas.
2) as per (1), but without the walls, with the terrain changing from (e.g.) industrial grey to grass.
3) transit platforms - each area is isolated from the others except for platforms linking them - you can see (and shoot!) across, but can only cross from the platforms.
I prefer a mix of (1) and (2), but (3) are by far the easiest and need least work....and could also provide the opportunity for a corridor type area. And I even have the bits for it  :D
Seeing the sort of approach I am taking, it would be fitting to include all three types - however opinions, and new ideas, are welcome.

I personally see it as a movie-world back lot thing. With walls covered in landscape backdrop images... Think Jim Carey, perhaps with empty 'stage' corridors between the lands where characters in the know can transverse between sets. Perhaps there are big gates of cities/garages/farms where the vehicles could move between the worlds.

A firm wall/ghetto will make the transition hard and more natural, a fade between forest and modern city over 2 inch would look a little strange. Play with the strange and make the board some kind of fantasy theme park (ie west world) or a movie back lot.

Cheers

That's my feeling, although I might try all three. The studio lot idea gives a lot of scope, and I just realised (duh!) that the walls do not have to be identical. West World would introduce models from the Old West too, and why stop there and not include Pirates?
I suddenly remembered the scene in Blazing Saddles where the big fight spills over into other movie sets.... oh dear  :D :D :D

That is...

Yeah! Either that or some dictator is stopping the fun and placing large concrete 'Berlin' walls between different sections. Patrolled by henchmen, watchtowers, barbed wire and German shepherds. (Combine the latest Lego movie with an oppressive regime)

:D

I read director instead of dictator first time round, so a mix of both would be good.
And yes, very Lego movie! Which means I can also use my Lego as another area....? ;D

The idea sounds great! Buildings could work as gates as well, I guess..
Go in at the front, and enter a new world by leaving the house by a backdoor..

Thanks; and it's not a dead project, but one which needs major organization.

STATUS:
finding storage for scenery bits - DONE (in the dungeon)
continue BRAZIL 1 board - WIP (detailing started after long hiatus)
start PEPPERLAND 1 board - WIP (assembly)
create FENCE 1- PAINTING
create storage solution for finished boards - HELP...

NEW WORLDS
the Grid (TRON)
Finity (finite element analysis world)

Now how do you build a Recognizer?

Pics at last.
The board is PEPPERLAND 1
It's NOT quite the Pepperland the Beatles had saved from the Blue Meanies, but you do get grass and sculptures and a red arrow.

We all lived in a yellow and red and olive drab armoured car,
yellow and red and olive drab armoured car,
yellow and red and olive drab armoured car....

Glove's eye view

A very puzzled Therian in border guard colours (the border guards make sure no-one crosses from one themed board to a different theme).

He is just a nowhere Therian....

 lol

I assume a n armoured car would be more helpful on land anyway ;)

Nice work so far, I'd put in more Soviet concrete statues and play the goldeneye downed helicopter level :D

I'd like to see the fences these therians build...

Cheers
