Start of Across the Dead Earth Campaign.
« on: June 09, 2014, 11:08:46 PM »
My mate Matt and I had a debut for our planned ADE campaign, set in Bedford, UK. I played the Kimbolton Road Budgens Duffers (KRBD's) and he played the Bunyan Road Skins (BRS's).

SCENARIO: The State has been forced to relocate elsewhere and have left 8 warehouses in Bedford unguarded. They are rumoured to contain lots of riches for the ones brave enough to venture there. The square is also guarded by a deranged pastor armed with a sniper rifle that will fire upon any “heathen” that he spots!

SPECIAL RULES: After entering any of the 8 pre-designated buildings they would contain Loot but only on a 1D6 roll on a 4+, otherwise they would be empty. The pastor would fire first in every round after the first round and in a direction of a scatter die, up to two shots on legitimate targets and if present one target from each side to make it more even.

Two gangs consisting of five Yobs each side (the Kimbolton Road Budgens Duffers and the Bunyan Road Skins) with only 10 points worth of equipment each (KRBD’s took two Iron Pipes and the Skins took a Machete and a Chain) set out to raid those warehouses and become rich. It took a short while but it became evident that most of them were quite empty, apart from worthless rubbish! The KDBD’s were lucky to escape with two Loot counters (totalling 15 points) and the BRS came away with one Loot counter (worth 5 points) after raiding all eight warehouses!!! What a disappointment!!

One of the KRBD’s got mercilessly gunned down by the Pastor early in the game and the BRS turned their eyes towards some bloodletting after the measly results of raiding the warehouses. One of the KRBD’s tried to shield the shot comrade but got shot in turn and the BRS’s wasted no time and took that unfortunate KDBD’s Yob Out of Action, earning another 10 pts. Then happened only what could be described as “The Big Punch Up in St Paul’s Square”!!!  Sven, the self-proclaimed leader of the KRBD’s defiantly fought first one, then two BRS’s at the same time! But even despite having lost his Iron Pipe (due to That’s Not A Knife-card) he managed not only to defend himself but against most probabilities punch the lights out on one BRS member!! But one of the BRS's was equally unyielding, he wasn't wounded once without going down, not twice even, but it took a third time to finally fell the Ganger! One of the other KRBD’s snuck in and put that one Out of Action, meanwhile elsewhere, Igor (another KRBD’s member armed with Iron Pipe) took a BRS’s member Out of Action. A third BRS’s member was taken Out of Action before the only standing member of their gang rushed off the board with their only Loot token, ending the game.

AFTERMATH: In the summary the KRBD’s got 45 points in total and the BRS’s got 15. The “Death is not always the End” table resulted in: Need time to recuperate, missing next game, suffered arm injury (-1 to H2H) and -1 Toughness for the three injured BRS's. And a serious but repairable injury (10 points cost) for the OOA KRBD Ganger.

THOUGHTS: It was a fun first game for the campaign with lots of unpredictable things going on. The Pastor worked very well, but we probably overdid it with the randomness for the Loot. Next time we’ve agreed to place Loot counters on the table instead of being too random.

We both like the idea of having to drag your Gang up from the bottom to be a force to be reckoned with, every piece of equipment is hard won with blood and guts. But we have also a House Rule: Yobs can be upgraded with +1 in each ability in the downtime after each game, providing they are fit for fight, at the cost of 5 points each. You can only upgrade them until they are Grunts (Move 6, Toughness 10 and Skill 6), and each ability can only be increased by +1 per game.

If you haven’t purchased the rules yet, why don’t you give them a go?
