The Universal Soldier Fantasy Battle System
Based in the world of Alioth, first introduced in 1987 with the Shadows and Steel box sets. It was followed in 1998 by the release of Death in the Dark, which advanced the timeline of the world of Alioth into the Age of Balance. Rafm Miniatures has long had enough fantasy miniatures to support gaming with this system.
Universal Soldier Fantasy Battle was a limited release in 2001 in .pdf form and after several hundred downloads it was taken off our system.
Now we are interested in reawakening the races of Alioth and the War of the Relics to the fantasy war game market.
What makes this system different?
The easy answer is several things. The more detailed answer, to name a few, is the experience system, the movement system, leadership and morale rules and finally a detailed campaign system that is at once fluid and detailed. Here are the highlights:
1. The Death in the Dark experience system was revolutionary in tabletop gaming and we still haven’t seen it reproduced to this day. This system allows your time between games to be as active as your time gaming, in terms of unit and character growth. It is possible that some game has this type of experience system but not a system with the support that RAFM Fantasy Miniatures provides. This system will be similar in feel to Charlie Company and Death in the Dark, with skills and powers in battle that units can develop. See your raw recruits turn into grizzled veterans during the course of a campaign.
2. The Campaign rules. This system can fill a book on its own. It will provide mapping alternatives and a system that helps determine the points that you can use to build your army and give you a realistic reason to determine your battle size, not just a randomly chosen number.
3. Simultaneous movement of units on the battlefield, obtained through orders. This has been a hallmark of the Universal Soldier rules since 1977, but it is now more manageable in game terms.
4. Morale rules that cause troops to break, and armies don’t necessarily fight to the last man, or elf.
5. Leaders and Heroes that make a difference in chain of command, morale and movement ability, lacking in other games. These Heroes are not just one-dimensional combat monsters. They bring real leadership and presence to an army.
Just for a second stop and think about how much fun it would be to develop a unit or an army that dies to the last man on the battlefield while holding against impossible odds. Or perhaps your soldiers march to glory overthrowing the capital city by being the first unit over the wall. Wouldn’t you like to make units like this, not just read about them?
