shops in York

Im going to York this weekend. Just wondered are there any games shops left? I haven't been there for 10 years or more.
There is a lot of good info in the previous York thread but noticed there was no mention of wargames shops.

Theres a games workshop which is the only wargames shop I know of.
There is one model shop for mainly railways, monk bar models at monk bar.

Coincidently going to york myself on saturday too if the weather holds up haha.

Boyes sells some stuff. Paints/hobby supplies , PSC, Perry and various kits.

Thanks, last time I was in York there was a games shop opposite my B&B i hoped it was still going.

I had a great time in York recently - I started the thread about the town before I went - and so am totally jealous that you're going at the weekend.  The Monk Bar shop was like going back to my childhood and the kinds of shops that were around back then - you know, just before the Romans went home!

Boyes is just up the road from Travelling Man (good for boardgames) and the Amnesty International charity bookshop (occasionally find something useful), and just around the corner from Monk Bar Models.

To the confusion of some people, Boyes model section is not in the toy department (although the toy dept. sometimes has a few Airfix kits), it is in the Hardware dept. Scarborough store has a better selection than York.

Monk Bar has quite a good selection of plastic figures - Zvezda, Red Box, Imai etc and the staff are quite knowledgable (although not always the most helpful).

Travelling Man has a few bit's of Privateer Press, Mantic and GW, as well as comics, board/card games and RPG books.
Was the shop opposite your B&B Small Soldiers on Gilligate? Used to love that shop when I was a youngster. Shame there's nothing like that around now.

Yes for a niche shop you would expect 'friendly customer service' but ahem not what you always get but they do have lots of nice stuff in stock.

The last time I was home I had a great day out in York, unfortunately the old games shop, "little soldier" is long gone. I used to go and buy something from there every time I visited.

Even without a wargames shop, its still a great place.

Monk Bar is a wonderful old fashioned menagerie, one of my favourite "model" shops after GeeDee in Nottingham. Always went more for kits and die casts than gaming stuff though.

Anyone remember Evan Moss?

Not sure that I know Evan Moss, but on the subject of diecasts, Boyes currently have some Corgi/Vanguard diecasts, mostly look like 1960s/70s cars, but I suspect it's an assortment.
Those are in the fancy goods dept.

Just got back this morning.
Ian kay kindly met me on Friday night so I could buy some Balkans war figs. It was much appreciated as he was busy getting ready for Durham.
Apart from that it was a gaming free weekend as was unable to slip away.

If that's an "unable to slip away from 'er indoors", there are plenty of diversions near Boyes etc. (also Boyes has fabric & craft depts or shoes etc)
