Stosstruppen tactics help
« on: June 16, 2014, 10:15:36 PM »
Hi,

A bit of a plea for help from you most knowledgeable chaps. Can anyone point me in the direction of a detailed account of very low level German Stosstruppen tactics in the Great War? I've been asked the question and thought I had some notes and I now can't find them. So can anyone point me in the right direction? My ideal would be a translation from the German available in open source (not too much to ask hey!  lol ) but any help would be very, very gratefully received,

Kind regards

Andy

Found this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Stormtroop-Tactics-Innovation-German-1914-1918/dp/0275954013

Funny thing is, if you click the 'click to look inside' you can pretty much read the book from the preview  lol

Maybe there is something of interest there for you  ;)

Thank you, I'll pass that on.

Does anyone know of any actual German manuals on this subject?

The book petercooman123 links to is indeed a good one. I don't know of any German manuals offhand, but I would bet there are some in the bibliography of that book.

Best analysis of it (considered the standard in the English language) is "Stormtroop Tactics" Innovation in the German Army, 1914 - 1918, by Bruce I. Gudmundsson (a military historian on the faculty of the US Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Quantico, Virginia).  The best first-person account is usually considered Ernst Junger's "Storm of Steel" (Junger was a Stosstrupp commander and the youngest winner of the Pour le Merite).

In terms of actual tactics grab one of the late war British manuals, as they incorporate storm trooper tactics(the commonwealth had no specialized for-purpose divisions although apparently the Canadians pretty much mastered it, Aleksei Brusilov would also be a good choice to look up as he basically invented and developed the concept.
