The Lee Photograph Gallery
« on: June 17, 2014, 03:45:47 AM »
Greetings everyone,
During the Civil War, 2 brothers started a photography business in Richmond Virginia. J.W. and Wm W. Davies were so pro confederate that they named their business after Robert E. Lee. The logo on this building is extremely scarce. If you look it up on the internet , you probably wont find it and info on this business in Richmond does not exist. I have a real Civil War era calling card (CDV) with this makers mark on the back. The only other example was an envelope in someones collection dated 1875, so the brothers were still using this 10 years after the war ended. I have no idea what this building looked like because I cant research it. This would be my impression of what it would look like.

Very evocative. Love what you've done to the place.

The weathering and worn look is great and the red goes well with the sand.

A few weeks ago I visited a UK photographers building in the Ryedale folk museum from around 1902 but did not get any pictures - a quick hunt has shown this:

From http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/244476

Key thing to note is the large window - a studio of the time would need lots of light but given how cloudy the UK is I think you can claim the front window was where the studio was in the building  :D.

Love the little cart at the side - did the paper exist?

Very rustic and well weathered.  Bobby Lee would be proud.   :)
