Zanshin - NEW DECKS
« on: June 17, 2014, 01:42:36 PM »
EDIT: The game name has ben chosen as Duel of Honour: Zanshin.
The first decks are being prepared, and for some updates on the rules read Page 4:

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I received the printed cards for a prototype i'm working on. It is a skirmish card game, that could be actually played with miniatures. Instead of focusing on characters stats and dice odds, i preferred to completely remove the dices, using a card game system for managing the fights.

In any moment, each fighter will have a stance, and each card (attacks or parrys or whatever) will lead them in another stance, that will influence the future moves and the dynamics of the fight.
The game it's about strategy, because certain moves will lead to bad positions, and other moves won't, all depending on the opponent moves.

Each character will have a small deck - only ~20 cards, maybe 24, so the game will not be too random, and each deck will be specifically designed (by me) to be kinda balanced with the others, with unique cards only describing the fighter style.
Thus, there will be very strong cards and really weak ones, some fighting styles will be ruthless, other will be cautious and based on the defence, other will be aiming to disorient the enemy parries, or to wait to take the right chance to strike.

basically, the core mechanics will be very simple, allowing an infinite possibilities of variations in the specific decks.

For the moment, i've 150 cards to play with and to use for betatesting and balancing, trying to find good values for a good gameplay...

But, first of all, I need a name!

Cheers
Jack

Both Daimyou (that's the correct spelling if you don't have the ō, i think) or Art of War resembles of big battles, where this is about duels between swordmasters.

The game is for 2-6+ players, each of them controlling (i think) one master swordsman or (maybe in the future) a group of 3 mobs.

For the name i was thinking at something less japanese, since the game system might (and hopefully will) work well for any period, so it would make a great gladiator game, or pirate or swashbuckler skirmish!

thanks again for the suggestions, LAFers!

And yet, I want to suggest "Skirmish in a Bento". Even though they are way too small to be bento boxes.

Looks interesting and may I humbly suggest 'Mushashi' as the game name  ;)

Michi has the spelling correct with the lengthened 'o'.

cheers

That's a very cool name!
But i would like to keep non-japanese, because the skirmish system could be used for any period...

He had, i was pointing out the plain Roma-Ji spelling :)

sword saint is a really interesting idea... not the name itself, but concentrating on the "sword masters" name type!
And again, possibly not-japanese style names, so i can use that for other periods too!

Sword Masters, or something similar might work!

"By the sword" maybe...

Will there be "just" swords or other melee-weapons as well?

What about Cold Steel
I'd say that covers all the edged weapons.

theoretically, it covers all the close combat weapons...

I'd say that covers all the edged weapons.

Cold steel isn't bad at all! But since it's about master fighters (any kind, possibly, famous samurais or D'artagnan or spartacus!), also focusing on the masters is interesting! :)

Lovely cards. You didn't happen to get them done by a Hong Kong based company by any chance?
