Pulp Alley Quick-Strike
« on: June 24, 2014, 08:11:03 AM »
A simple question really: Is the Pulp Alley skill Quick-Strike (lower Brawl dice-type to get two additional dice) applied before or after Health dice restriction? In other words, is Quick-Strike extra useful when a Sidekick is lowered to d6 health, or is not allowed?

An injured Sidekick (d6 Health) would not normally be able to use Quick-Strike.

However, if they had something like Muscles of Steel then they could Quick-Strike even if they were injured.

I hope that helps.

Thanks!

I have a somewhat more tricky couple of questions (and moving into backside retentiveness) regarding splitting dice. The rules says that splitting dice counts as one fight in regards to the Multiple Combat penalty, which is all good. But what about A) Health checks and B) Dodge moves?

A) If a character suffers hits from two sources when splitting dice, are they treated separately? E.g. can a Sidekick with Health d8 end up being Down in a single activation if he/she chose to split dice and got unlucky?

B) If a character chooses to "dodge attack" in close combat and split dice, can he/she Dodge Move after the first fight is resolved (and of course all opponent successes matched), or must the character manage to match ALL successes from ALL opponents in order to Dodge Move?

Also, is it possible to split dice when using Dodge instead of Shoot on an active character ("area suppression" or something similar)?

Yes. In some situations the attacker could even go down before resolving each fight - in this case the remaining fights are simply cancelled.

Yes. When the character makes his Dodge Move, this immediately cancels the other fights if he is no longer engaged with them. This is where picking your first target is so important.

Interestingly enough, the same thing can happen if a defender plays 'Knockback'.

Yes. It's a very dangerous and difficult tactic to pull off successfully -- unless you're shooting at a bunch of animals;)

And remember -- each target must be in close range.

Great questions. It's cool to see folks discovering/exploring these tactical options.

Is this making a 'shooting' attack against multiple opponent in close range? So you would split your dodge in response to multiple 'shots' made against opponents. If the opponents were animals, they would not be able to shoot back, but instead dodge your dodge and perhaps setup a later brawl with another character utilizing the multiple previous combat penalty. If you split-dodged as a shooting attack against gunmen, they would be allowed to shoot at you, in short range, with the only consequence that later, they would likely suffer a multiple combats penalty.

100% correct.

"Keep Their Heads Down!" -- Attacking an enemy and choosing to roll your Dodge skill simply represents an attempt to suppress the offensive effectiveness of your target(s).

I should point out that just because it can be done, doesn't mean its the best option. You really got to pick and choose the right moment for some of these tactics.  ;)

Like in most action movie and tv show shootouts, this represents someone that is shooting in the general direction of the enemy but not really aiming. It just means they are shooting, but are much more interested in not getting hit.  ;)

In game terms, you simply start the fight as normal but roll your Dodge dice instead of your Shoot dice.

It's pretty rare that anyone actually does this.

We do it... Drawing fire can be useful, but risky. Red-shirt stuff for certain, but still good fun.

I have some rather acrobatic 'Intrepid Explorers' (League Perk) that are lousy shots but good problem solvers. They can often dodge closer to their objective while putting down some suppressive fire against enemies with multiple combat penalties or reduced health dice.

ah ok, so if you initiate the attack and use your dodge dice, how does that work if they use their shoot dice back - if you lose I assume you take damage, if you hit do you still do damage?

If you lose you take damage as normal. If you win nothing happens (apart from the possibility of a Dodge Move if that is beneficial).

Thanks for the confirmation Dave.

I like Peabody's use of Intrepid Adventurer. Run. Shoot-Dodge against multiple close opponents. Dodge 3 more inches toward the plot point. Wait for the backup to come in and mop up the suppressed opponents.
