Eli Wallach, dead at 98.

Ladies and gentlemen please bow your heads and spare a thought for one Tuco Benedicto Pacífico Juan María Ramírez, wanted in 15 counties of this state, found guilty by the Third District Circuit Court of the following crimes: murder; assaulting a Justice of the Peace; raping a virgin of the White race, and statutory rape of a minor of the Black race; perjury; bigamy; deserting his wife and children; inciting prostitution; kidnapping; extortion; of derailing of trains in order to rob the passengers; robbery; highway robbery; robbing an unknown number of post offices; breaking out of a prison; arson in a state prison; associating with known criminals; and contrary to the laws of this state the condemned is guilty of using marked cards and loaded dice; receiving stolen goods; selling stolen goods; passing counterfeit money; catching and selling fugitive slaves thereby violating standing articles of war; of impersonating multiple persons in a high place of authority; including but not limited to in the Sheriff's Office in Sonora; setting fire to a wagon train; making false statements; making false statements in advance; of selling a hundred rounds to a Souix Indian; also guilty of supplying Indians in open rebellion to territorial authorities; mis-representing himself as a Mexican general; mis-representing himself as a confederate captain, mis-representing himself as a union colonel; and of theft of salary and allowance from the Union Army; but above all, he is most guilty of being the greatest character in the greatest western of them all (with all due apologies to those who prefer Once Upon A Time in the west or another film), may god have mercy on his soul.

A great loss,
Just watched The Magnificent 7 yesterday and The Good the Bad and the Ugly and The Holiday a few days ago.
He had a good innings at 98 though, don't expect I will last that long.

A screen icon, without a doubt, and one who deserves that accolade more than many many others who have held it.

A fine actor, whose roles in films at the heart of the Western genre are a massive influence on anyone who games the wild west.

On the difference between men and women …

Me: Oh, Eli Wallach has died.
Female colleague: Who?
Me: You know, he was "the Ugly" in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Male colleague: And the Mexican bandit in The Magnificent Seven.
Female colleague: No, that doesn't mean anything to me, but I know the name … Hold on, I think he was in The Holiday.
Second female colleague: Oh, if it was him, he was good in The Holiday.  Was it him?
Me/Male colleague: Um … dunno.  What was The Holiday?
Back from the dead, almost.

Throw in Baby Doll for that extra dollop of confusion since many people don't seem to be aware that cinema was invented before 1960. One hell of a screen debut, mind you, and a character far removed from the Mexican bandits he became famous for later on.

Many people also aren't aware of the fact that when he was not making movies in Hollywood, Wallach was one of the most distinguished stage actors in New York City. There was much more to the man than good old Tuco, popular though that character may have been.
