Warriors of Rohan (Captain of Rohan Added 25/08/14)
« on: June 28, 2014, 10:49:55 AM »
The baby finally slept long enough for me to get a couple of snaps of my recently painted warriors of Rohan based on Musketeer Miniatures.  I've got to say, I'm really pleased with the quality of these miniatures and their suitability for Rohirrim!

For those who want the complete story, it's on my blog: http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/warriors-of-rohan.html

They make some good riders of Rohirrim. Look forward to seeing what you use for Orks and Urkhi

You can see some of my orcs in action here:

At the moment, I'm not distinguishing between Orcs and Urk-hai, as I've never had them take the field together...

nice, I always kind of just meshed them together myself. Just paint one group differently or give them different kit and call it a day.  lol

I also have the Wargames Factory Orcs because I love their look (I'd like them even more if they were made of metal) and am still searching for matching opponents. I'll take a look at the Musketeer Miniatures ranges, they look really good. Thanks for the hint!

"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

At the moment, I'm not distinguishing between Orcs and Urk-hai, as I've never had them take the field together...

There is a reference to 'Uruks of Mordor'. Orc is the Westron version of Orch (Sindarin) derived from Uruk (Black Speech). So Orcs = Uruks = Orcs. Uruk-hai just means (approximately) 'Orc-folk'. In the wake of the films and the GW game it's become conventional to refer to 'Goblins of Moria, Orcs of Mordor, Uruks of Isengard' but all of these are the same thing - Goblins (to the Hobbits), Orcs (in Elvish-derived Westron) and Uruks (in their own tongue).

It really iritates me (I know it shouldn't, but hey-ho) that, in the book, in Moria, Legolas says 'Orcs!', but in the film, he says 'Goblins!'. Wrong, as 'Goblins' is a term only used by Hobbits or those with some relation to them (Gandalf, Gimli, Aragorn). Elves always call them 'Orcs' (or 'Yrch', the Sindarin plural, as in Lorien). Just Jackson misunderstanding the source-material I guess...

Lovely Rohirrim by the way! So carried away with my explanatins of the inter-relationships between Middle Earth languages (which is, after all what the LotR is about, no ;) ?) that I completely forgot to complement you on your a) taste in minis and b) skill with a paintbrush. They look excellent. I'm beginning to build a Rohan force myself, but I'm using the GW figures as they're mostly plastic. I'm also a terrible painter so mine won't look anything like as nice as these!

True that. I vaguely remember now being impressed as a kid, because the Elf of course would use the word orc and from that point on things got more serious.

Exactly! I'm glad it's not just me then. I think Jackson misse a trick there. It's completely true that that one word marks a shift in the tension because, holy shit, we're being hunted underground by orcs.
