My Armoured Train Proletarakaya Revolutsiya
« on: July 30, 2008, 04:31:03 PM »
I've finally finished my armoured train. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get red stars and crrillic slogans on the side but had to give up - I couldn't get snopage to stick to the paint.  I managed to get some 1:72 RCW decals from |Black Lion and they don't look too small and some WW2 air decals which were even better with a white edge to the stars.  The basic vehicles I used were HO model railway but I tried to heighten the various wagons so that 28mm figures don't look too out of scale.

At the centre of the train is the heavily armoured engine:

I found putting the rivets on quite soothing but it was a job figuring out where the various doors and hatches needed to be so that the mechanicals could get oiled and  the driver could see where he was going.

I will post this now since I am still very unsure abouyt how to post photos.  If this one works I will do a second with the rest of the photos.

The link is to the page and not to the individual photo.  Remove the img and it will link to your Flicker page.

Try again time.

The train consists of the armoured loco above and two armoured wagons (plus a few other unarmoured wagons carrying supplies and fuel for the accompanying vehicles). Armoured wagon "For Rosa Luxembourg" has a fixed artillery piece at one end and an m/g in a turret at the other with another couple of m/gs at the side.  I tried to persuade HLBS to sell me their m/g barrel sprue separately, without success, so have used grooved (using an Olfa tool) plastic tube and brass pins for the barrels.

The second armoured wagon "For Karl Liebknecht" has two turrets, a gun turret at one end and an m/g at the other with the usual m/gs at each side.

I have a better picture showing the train Commander and some Red Guards alongside but realised the gun turret had got dislodged so just assume it is being repaired internally.

Here are some vehicles inc an armoured car filling up from the tank wagon.

Finally a couple of longer views of the train (Alas the backdrop disappears - but no matter)

and with even less backdrop:

As you will realise I am a complete novice a both taking  pictures and putting them on here so please bear with me.

What method did you use for the rivets?

Its a method I've used when scratchbuilding model railway wagons.  Ideally you want Plastruct or Slaters strip the width of a rivet but that is no longer made so you buy the narrowest and split it, 10mm or so length at a time then chop into tiny cubes.  You can afford to throw away any that look too big or too small.  Then pick up each with a pair of pointed tweezers (from that excellent shop Squires) and place where you want them to go - I usually do about five at a time.  Then flood the area from a brush with methpak or similar polystyrene liquid.  The Methpak  rounds off the corners and even if they aren't all the same size the effect is pretty good.  The method usually recommended, picking them up with a methpaked paint brush tip never works for me - the damn things just refuse to leave the brush for the intended spot.

I also find putting one at each corner and then the centre and then fiilling in from each end to centre helps me get even spacing in any line.  But one always comes off so after a day or so flood the area again to try to fix them all down.  Even then painting will usually dislodge one - there is a missing one on my train I didnt see until very late of - and just left.

The other thing that looks good is creating all the access hatches, putting on strip hinges with rivets on them too.  The Olfa tool is great for creating grooves on pllasticard (as well as splitting it) and the separate sheets on the wagons are in reality just one sheet with grooved lines marking the different "pieces" of armoured plate

Very nice.  While I appreciate the properties of liquid cement on plastic, it's hard to believe all those rivets started off square.

That looks great!

FYI, we will be releasing our "train bits"  as in the turrets (two sizes) Mg barrels, and 75mm barrels for you do it yourself modelers.  Also flat cars with wheels as well, which are quite easy to rework or add on to.

I'll post an update as soon as I have the new "parts" page completed.
