DeepWars - Cephalid Biomancer
« on: July 15, 2014, 07:27:32 PM »
Here was a very fun one to paint, the Cephalid Biomancer. It was actually started with some base coats by another painted but I went ahead and did the glazes, washes and highlights.

AntiMatter Games is running a Kickstarter right now where this figure can be chosen as a reward.  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/524168246/shadowsea-mini-kicker-the-good-the-bad-and-the-sca

Great job on that one!  I agree he looks like a lot of fun to paint, as with all the other Dark Mariners.

How do you highlight the reds on your shell?  I have been using an orange for the highlights, but I would not mind trying to recreate the shell as you have done it.

The base color is bone and white on the shell. The first glaze is burnt sienna ink, mixed with a bit of Indian Yellow paint (like a dark golden yellow). This was mixed with matte medium and applied as wash more than a glaze. The second glaze is pthalo blue ink + matte medium. Then there is a bit of forest green glazes here and there. The highlights are Reaper golden highlight, mixed with white for final edge highlights.

It is based on Song of Blades and Heroes, so the rules are fairly simple. DeepWars adds complexity with more armor, weapons and special items though, so it has a bit of an RPG aspect to it as models in a warband can grown and become more powerful during a campaign.

Woooah. You just stopped me cold with this one. You sure know how to handle those inks.

It's a pretty fun game, with lots of options for roleplaying and mission-based scenarios.  I think the RPG element has more promise rather than just straightforward combat, and the underwater rules add a nice element to the game.

Are you familiar with how the Song of Blades and Heroes game system works?
