FPW Uniforms
« on: July 24, 2014, 07:44:44 PM »
Hello,

Can anyone recommend a couple of good FPW uniforms books (other than Osprey)?

Cheers

Most good french language books are sadly out of print but you can find much info on this blog:

"The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there ... in peace. War will make corpses of us all."

La Garde Imperiale de Napoleon III by Louis Delperier is recent and well illustrated.

Gotta love that 'Prussian Ulahun'!

The most detailed source of information regarding French uniforms of the period is the invaluable series of articles written - mostly - by Louis Delpérier and published in the 1980's and 1990's in Uniformes and Tradition. These magazines are now out of print, though second-hand copies can still be purchased on Ebay at reasonable prices.

If you are not too demanding and don't require in-depth coverage with properly footnoted sources, André Jouineau has over a hundred digital plates available for download on his Images de Soldats website. I have mixed feelings about Jouineau as he is essentially recycling the research work done by others but his plates can come in handy if you are in a hurry. I wouldn't recommend buying them all though as this could prove an expensive proposition.

Thanks Paco. I've downloaded the pages from your blog. The Champs de Bataille magazine has a few FPW and colonial wars issues that I must have.  :)

i don't have every "Champ de bataille " as they are realy unequal in quality between an author and another and "iconography" is sometimes very poor or fool of mystaken !

For the line infantry, the best source is issue 34 of Tradition magazine dated October 1989. It features a 27-page dossier with more photographs and paintings than you can shake a scanner at.
