Dutch Flags and Uniforms c.1745
« on: July 29, 2014, 11:52:58 AM »
Hello folks,

I'm looking to find images or accounts of Dutch colours and uniforms around the time of Fontenoy (c.1745). I'm not that into historical accuracy I'm just looking for inspiration for painting my mercenary units for Maurice. Have had no luck so far.

Thanks for any help in advance!

As typical for Dutch armies they had many different uniforms so there is not a single style or colour pattern that was used. I believe the most common is (dark) blue coat with red borders/lining etc.. Black tricorne with yellow or white borders. Pant white (or some red). The flags are more difficult, I suppose they won't be that different from those of the spanish succesion wars and I know warflag has some of those (they aren't perfect but it's a good start.

Thanks for the reply. Blue coats sounds just right (and easy to paint!). I'll have a look at what Dutch WSS flags are available from people like Flags of War.

The Vjinkhausen (sp?) collection at the NYPL is your friend, they have lots of colour plates on the subject matter. Sorry I don't have the link at hand. If nobody else chimes in, google  NYPL + uniform collection.

Thanks, didn't know about that archive! Perfect

Does anyone have any info on infantry flags?

The Dutch Swiss units seemed to have a flame pattern on theirs during the war of spanish succession. Anyone know if they retained these up untill 1745?
