Looking for some miniatures/ideas
« on: August 07, 2008, 04:44:19 PM »
Hello,

I'm slowly gathering miniatures for my 3D Arkham Horror project. Most of the mythos creatures are well documented and readily available, typically from RAFM. However, there are some types where I'd like to ask an expert.

Fire Vampires - Using this as my quick source, it would appear that these are not pointy-toothed Hungarian aristocrats at all but some kinds of creatures of pure energy. As it would be rather difficult to have "many points of fiery light" floating above a base, I'd guess something like a traditional D&D fire elemental might do. Maybe something relatively small with no armour or spiky bits? Just the flame. This guy on the right, for example, would be close to what I'm thinking about...any other ideas?

(BTW, metal minis only, applies to all items in this post. No pre-painted or transparent plastics etc.)

Witch - As with many AH counters, FFG apparently didn't do much research but instead just put some of their generic fantasy clipart there. In my background books HPL witches tend to be ugly old women who know some secrets. Should be easy to find but if you have a suggestion for one in a 20s-compatible costume then let me know.

Ghosts - Again, fantasy clipart with chains and that usual "boo" pose in the chit. I'd prefer a completely formless spirit thing or alternatively some mostly normal human figure painted in ghostly colours. This looks better and actually more scary than most wraithy things out there. No skulls, swords or plate mails, please...or that "boo" pose... Madmen, worried nuns or completely lost souls, maybe?

Warlock - I haven't given this much thought yet. All ideas appreciated.

Now when we're here, I'd also like to hear some suggestions for adventurers. RAFM has some nice ones, although I have to get all three variants of each role in a blister. Pulp Figures have some good stuff but they're in even more awkward packs of five. Dixon gangsters are occasionally useful. Artizan looks good and easy to buy individually. Steve Barber is nice too. There are some warnings of their smaller 25mm scale. It shouldn't be any major problem as I don't expect having perfect consistency of scale anyway. Any comparison pics? Grenadier's old detectives would be great but apparently very much OOP and potentially fetching immense eBay prices. The re-release by Mirliton seems to be nothing more than a persistent rumour with no progress after five years.

Is there still something important I've missed? Please keep in mind that usually I need just a few individual miniatures so huge packs or extortive minimum shipping don't sound very pleasing. European companies preferred but not 100% required.

Thanks for any help.

Aren't the em4 ones the Grenadier set, RevFord? I think they're starting to show their age a bit, personally.

Dolmot, don't Hasslefree do a madman in a starightjacket that could make a nice ghost with a suitable paintjob?

Yup, and other sinister types too:

And the Heresy dark Lord might serve as a Warlock, or generic evil dude.

What about Black Cat Bases for their Lost and the Strange line?

Bound to be something in there you could use.

I think so, there are lots of nicer sculpts about these days, but there are a few good monsters and they're all great value.

Damn, I forgot to mention the eM-4 range in my post...

...partially because they look so unspeakably dire in the pics...

Anyway, I'm fairly sure they're actually recasts of Metal Magic's old CoC line. That's what this article says (and gives them surprisingly positive reviews, by the way). There are some original blisters on eBay right now (link may expire soon) and they look the same to me - excluding that eM's paint and photo job, of course. Grenadier's adventurers look like this and despite of some resemblance they're different models.

Black Cat's detective & investigator look potentially useful. Madmen too, even though I'd possibly field them as maniacs instead and find something else for ghosts. Cultists are always useful and quite numerous. Eureka, Artizan, Hasslefree, RAFM and probably many others make them. All I need to do there is to pick my favourite. Some snakemen might be worth buying as they appear occasionally in the game and my local shop imports eM-4 stuff by request. Easy to get and dirt cheap too.

Looking good but even more ideas are still welcome. Thanks for the replies this far.

The Ral Partha fire elemental is a flaming skeleton.
Judging from the size of the base in this image (taken from coolminiornot) it's quit big too

Honestly, I would look at the D&D miniatures - there are not only elementals, but stuff like living fireballs and such. Besides, if you are feeling lazy, they do them out of transparent orange.

Check out the firebat...

Hope this helps...

well, speaking of GamesWorkshop, one of their new Dark Elves,
this guy here, Lokhir Fellheart,
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99060212086&orignav=13

has a nice and shiny tentacléd helmet - he might be a bit too much on the fantasy side, but for Cthulhu 1700s he might fit as a crazed cult leader or other..
