28mm PBR
« on: August 09, 2014, 09:19:17 PM »
I think I am correct in saying that there are currently no 28mm or 1/48th scale Vietnam PBR's on the market/available with the exception of the Old Glory version which looks too short IMHO.

Does anyone have a model under design/ waiting to take to market? If not I think I will just have to try and scratch build a few. It seems strange that such an iconic vessel isn't available. I have one of the Cold War miniatures boats which is excellent but these are sadly out of production now.

I have be looking for a good one for a number of years.
I will try to find the post,
one of the LAF members started working on one and it looked great.
But it was a post about a year or two ago.

P.S. I found the post.
July 19, 2012 on Workbench.
LAF member's name is Durutti.
Sorry I am having to leave and am not sure how to link it.

Yes, Durutti was making one and he's a pretty good modeller into the bargain. Like most LAF members, he's a nice guy and I'm sure he wouldn't mind a PM asking about it... if he does, by all means blame me for suggesting it.

Revell have (had?) a 1:48 scale one:

EDIT: sorry, it's a PCF not a PBR, although it could be useful still....

EDIT 2: Cold War Miniatures had one, it seems, but could not trace it. And West Wind Productions d 3 boats, according to this site:

None are shown on their catalogue though...

Cold War one has been out of production for some time and the last I heard, it wouldn't be coming back as moulds of some parts had gone missing IIRC.

It seems that there's no interest from the people who make such stuff. Although at the beginning of the year it looked like things were starting to happen nothing materialised. At least nothing concerning 28mm. It seems that Nam is becoming something for 1:72 scale and smaller.
An option that is still open is scratch building a PBR. I think it is do-able though to get it historically accurate would be a challenge. But i think there's enough 28mm parts available to accesesorize a scratch build something so that it is recognizeable as a PBR.

I think the main issues here is scale...

to properly use a PBR and not having it just as table decoration you need a large river in 28mm, so it is a subject better represented in 15mm or smaller scale. Once I toyed with the idea of getting ht eCold War miniatures one when it was available but then realized it would have been a waste of money. I have seen awe inspiring games featuring the MRF or other riverine units in 28mm, but then the entire things did not sound right to me, scale was awfully compressed and the actions (beside requiring giant rooms and long table put together) did not resemble anything I have read about.

just my two cents,

Arrigo
