Texas Revolution - Georgia Battalion "Uniform" Suggestions
« on: August 21, 2014, 09:52:33 AM »
Hi

Putting a question out to Lead Adventure having failed to uncover any uniform details on the Georgia Battalion during the Texas Revolution. This was a large outfit - bigger than the New Orleans Greys, and information I have suggests a good portion of the volunteers were equipped and supplied by their Commander. It seems they would have some kind of uniform but details might be lost or never recorded ...

Alternatively, if anyone has information on Georgia Militia during the 2nd Seminole war, that might work for cross duty in Texas. The next challenge will be to find 28mm figures for the period in some sort of quasi uniform! I even read recently that many of the Texas soldiers at San Jacinto might have been in Texas supplied uniforms.

Thanks for any help.

Osprey's The seminole War, has the Georgia Militia in a black top het, black cockade and a red-fringed brown hunting shirt and buckskin leggings.

B2: Georgia militiaman
He wears a black felt round hat with fore-and-aft peak and a
black leather cockade bearing a small metal eagle badge.
His drab-colored cloth hunting shirt with integral double
cape shows an unravelled red cloth fringe. Tanned hide
leggings cover his black cloth trousers. He is armed with a
French .69cal Charleville musket, and his gear consists of a
powder horn and leather ball pouch, an unpainted wooden
canteen, and a hunting knife with a white bone grip tucked
in his waist belt.

May I refer you to my Boot Hill Miniatures range of 28mm figures for the Texas Revolution/Alamo.

www.boothillminiatures.co.uk

As to reference material I have not seen anything with uniform details for the Georgia battalion. They seem to be overshadowed by the more famous NOGs and Alabama Red Rovers.

From my research I know that many of the volunteer units from the States were equipped with surplus US army gear, so I guess shell jackets, slouch hats, forage caps, etc will suffice along with US army issue muskets.

Hopefully you will find some figures in my range that will suffice. I am adding more  including US army deserters and volunteers with US army equipment soon. I am just about to get the Red Rovers and more volunteers cast(the greens are in one of the galleries on the website :)

There's no plate in my copy of Marshall's "Uniforms of the Alamo":
http://www.schifferbooks.com/uniforms-of-the-alamo-and-the-texas-revolution-and-the-men-who-wore-them-1835-1836-490.html

It does have a plate of an American Army Volunteer; a look similar to the New Orleans Greys and Alabama Red Rovers but in a mid blue.
