Build a U boat? 1/48th scale
« on: August 31, 2014, 06:51:29 PM »
Spotted a partwork in WHS today - part one is just 50p and includes a 6 inch long etched brass deck section.

The complete kit makes a 1/48th model of the U96

How about making one out of thin sheets of hand cut blue foam?

honestly, as much as I like the idea, I don't see the purpose of a 139 cm/55inch boat on a tabletop. there are numerous size reduced versions I have seen that are very appropriate for gaming.
Besides, the only dteailed parts bnecessary are the deck structure and the deck guns. The conning tower should be no problem to scratchbuild. So, a few gun models and some plastic sheet for the deck, say 50€, and Bob's Your blood relative, right?

has anyone tried to convert one of the 1/72 plastics, btw?

Subs are cramped enough realscale. I haven't done subs yet, but having done gameable boats they tend to get a bit toylike because you have to account for figure base sizes everywhere.

If you're not supposed to be able to place figures on it, things are a bit different.

of, I can fully see the attraction of gaming in such a set

as to the waterline deck model - yes, I have always thought of using magnets instead of bases for naval wargames -I have yet to try it out

You're not trying hard enough.  I reckon I could do one for under £20.

Cardboard is your friend.

Whether or not I'd have a use for it is another matter...

That's the set for The Life Aquatic, isn't it?
