Cheap dark age/early medieval boats
« on: September 02, 2014, 01:30:21 PM »
Although I have a few viking longships getting stolen cattle aboard during a raid was always clumsy, as the cattle bases always seemed too big. Then I saw a Noah's Ark in the charity shop and bought if for about £1.

Sliced to waterline, chopped off the zoo shed on top, added a stern post, and figure head, and mast. A bit of work to add a steering oar and I think this will serve as a knorr. It still needs a sail and a removeable section where the gangway allows stock to be loaded.

In light of its less martial role the figurehead comes from a Christmas decoration deer. I foresee it will have a busy career. A useful addition for just a pound.

I like it, in many ways a Knarr is a more useful boat for games, particularly skirmish games, than a Drakkar

That should do the trick nicely.
Good find!

I am assuming that you kept the 'zoo shed' as the basis for a hall or somesuch later...?

You could even use the cut-off underside!

this is amazing! You even made the rustic stem, for which the "Knorr"  appears to be named.

btw, the german description differentiates between knarr and knorr, and it is not related to gravy boats

Great stuff, it just shows what can be achieved with a bit of thought (my weak department)
