I would like to add a few comments to the latest pictures posted.
I do not mean to criticize but only implement and clarify.
The black patch on the "bersaglieri"  knees is not part of the uniform, i suppose it is a  modification to save the trouser done by the re enactors.
The second picture is about the "Lancieri di Vittorio Emanuele" an all volunteers unit created during of the second war of unification (12 june 1859).
The third picture is about the "Piemonte Reale"  (Royal Piedmont) one of the oldest cavalry unit in the army, see the attached picture to see the helmet of the regiment.
The fourth picture is not of the period.
It's about late 1800 early 1900 as I can understand from the hat and others small particular.

following this long and beautiful tread about miniatures depicting the Risorgimento history i find this nice plate by famous Horace Vernet..the great French artist was director of the Académie de France in Rome and depicted the contemporary events of the Eternal City..in this painting some Pontifical Dragoons are engagig the famous Briganti outlaws..in fact something more than outlaws..(they fought with and against every power and sovereign) and they  had to be countered , all over Southern Italy , by regular troops..from French Revolutionary Armies up to the beginning of Italian unification ...Gringo Piciotti range are suitable to depict those romantic outlaws..from 1799 up to 1870
the second one , again a Brigante, ambushed by a Pontifical Dragoon suggest us ..to do not trust Italian ladies  ;)

italwars these are superb plates I have never seen before
and very inspirational................as mentioned before I will
be expanding this range due to the levels of interest and because
it is a fascinating project. Do you have any plates on a mounted
Piccotto leader or even more ladies for the picciotto as I assume
they wore similar garb to their menfolk.
The Papal troops in action............Dragoon regiment are a stirring
brace of plates! :o

many thanks for sharing

Thanks Malto and Gringo for appreciating the picts i posted...i'll find others also concerning mounted bandits and post it...but just a note..they are not what you called "piciotti"..this therm , in Sicilian language, refers only to Sicilian peasants/worker class..and , unfortunatly, and recently, to guys affiliated , also if at the bottom of the organisation, to what we all know as "Mafia" criminal organisation...in Garibaldi time they referred only to peasant volunteers, that more or less willingly, followed their land lord that sided with Garibaldi Red Shirts.....my picts instead refers to what we called "Briganti"...frequently transalted in English or French litterature as "Bandits"...their uniform was slightly different..above all for the flamboyant short tunic and Calabrian tall decorated hat...they were very proud and universally feared for their appearance...they usually sided with the Ancien Régime and not with the liberals...and they populated the mountain and forest of Southern and Central Italy..not Sicily....useless to add that, in any case, Gringo Piciotti minis, particularly those  with hat, could perfectly represent those fearsome Briganti...

About the pict of reenacting "Bersaglieri"..a bit more aged to storm Roman defences :D...the knee pads sported on the white fatigue trousers where historically correct..but , obviously on one knee only, as they were aimed to protect and make more confortable the aiming kneeling stance of those sharpshooters..from contemporary picts, in any case, it seem that they were used only during musketry training..not in action

Italwars.....great and enlightening explanation
of the Piciotto and Briganti...I had tried to make
my Piciotto as varied as possible so gamers could
use them "post" Garabaldini..when the Piedmonte
army stepped in. The Pointed "Calabrian" hat is a favourite
of mine.......may have to add even more spendidly attired
Briganti......I summise they were not all dressed that flamboyantly! :o :-* ;D...

Italwars very beautiful pictures.
I appreciated your definition of picciotti and briganti.
I was wrong about the patch (see the attached pictures (one show a kneepad) also if i think that they are individual adaptations rather than official rules.

from unit to unit....cording / buttons placement/  overall the
uniforms were similar...............trying to find the best looking
of the various ten battalions in 1860.............cheers Ged :D
