Barbarians! - Too Many Chiefs...?
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:27:38 PM »
As soon as I saw the 15mm Copplestone miniatures a few years ago I knew I had to have them despite them not being my usual scale. I have hoarded many packs of them but I've finally made a proper start on painting them. Turns out I enjoy painting this smaller scale too.

I'll probably be using these guys in either a Conan the Barbarian type game or Skyrim inspired skirmish game.

First up, Barbarian command group, painted with my Viking reenactment groups shield colours and knot work.

Excellent work. On a whim I recently picked up two packs of Barbarians and two of Picts. This will certainly inspire me.

The Hairy Lads may be little, but they are BEAUTIFULLY detailed, painted, & based creations as well. VERY WELL DONE!

Thanks chaps. These really have got top notch sculpting which makes them a joy to paint. Unfortunately I still take as long to paint each one as I do a 28mm  lol

I just have to try selling this idea to you (your models are beautifully painted, and deserve being put to multi-purpose use):

Start making a small skirmish force.

Then plan and paint a Viking army for SAGA using these (doesn't matter that they are not historical, just use them as such).

Then, when you have accomplished that task, take a look at God of battles, and paint some more models to make a Thousand Tribes army.

Round bases are just fine for all those purposes, and if you need any guidance as to how to tweak the GoB lists to work for barbarian hordes (but I'm sure you won't), just ask.

That way you'll have an army useable for skirmish, medium battles, and full scale battles - and if you like fast-playing, but tactically challenging rules, you'll also have hours upon hours of entertainment for years to come. I have played SAGA a couple of times, and GoB only once (although I've watched a couple of games using my 28mm Undead and Minas Tirith forces), and I've never looked back since then; simply my favourite rulesets for dark age and sword and sorcery style (I do like Song of Blades for smaller engagements, too, but...).

I have a bunch of mounted Copplestone 15mm barbarians for a 'fantasy steppe' style GoB army, that I'm going to work on this winter (I have to get some 28mm armies ready for Horisont VI late November, first), and I'm teally looking forward to having both a couple of GoB28 armies, AND a GoB15 army to use  against members of the growing GoB15 community here in Denmark.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Damn, Gut.  I wish when I put a paintbrush in my hand the results were half as good as yours...

@Argonor: Saga and God of Battles are both rulesets I'd like to take a look at so using these guys for that is a great idea. I definitely like the idea of a larger force (I probably already have more than I need for a skirmish game).

@Elbows: Thanks, though I dare say you'd do a cracking job on them yourself. I've only done basic colours on each area with a single highlight in most cases and then wash the whole thing in Agrax Earthshade (GW's new version of Devlan mud I think). Really easy to paint.

A small update. A couple of "big" guys for the warband. A snow troll and a brown bear. I have three bears (werebears) and their human forms, I intend to paint each different, brown bear, black bear and polar bear and their human form shall have hair to match each bear.

Next on my painting table are some hairy warriors, cavalry and some awesome Warchiefs.
