Hollow half-domes ?
« on: September 26, 2014, 06:36:53 AM »
Do any of you guys know where I could buy some small acrylic half-domes (no larger than 10mm diameter)
I got some from the local arts-supply store, but only found out they were solid when I got home and they have to be hollow.
I have 2 Crawler Cyborgs by Brother Vinni that I'm planning to convert those into Robobrains.
I managed to copy the brains from a horrorclix figure now I just need 2 domes to cover them.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

I keep thinking of cheap stuff, like capsule toy shells or the lids for slushy drinks.

I know, I did find some strips of pills in my medicine cabinet that I could use as a substitute (since the bubbles on those aren't really the shape I want)
I probably should have a look at some cheap toys in the store.

Your best bet is probably heatforming some blister plastic is similar.

Try find a suitable "mold", a rounded wooden dowel or similar. Heat the plastic and pull in on top of the "mold".

the round end of some transparent writing implement would appear the right place to look for

First thought is: can you not just drill out the solid half-domes you have?

Second thought is: why do they have to be acrylic?

Third thought is: can you not buy hollow balls and cut them in half? For example, these. Alternatively, what about the hollow balls you get in the end of things like ladies' concealer applicators?

More ideas:

- Teddy bear/dolls eyes?
- Googly eyes?
- Cheapo jelwellery beads (example)?
- Hemispherical plastic screw covers for bathroom mirrors?

Well, they need to fit over a brain like this:

I've been thinking about using my mototool to drill out the solid ones, but I don't know if they will turn opaque. Then again, it's not like I have another use for 'em  ::)
I really need them clear so the brains are visible, which is also the main reason several of your other suggestions won't cut it for me. (beads crossed my mind, but are also mostly solid...)

Should be, but the plastic is fairly thin - you can slice the dome off with a sharp knife carefully.

Then again, they come in several sizes, and you get 100 for £0.99, so I guess you can afford a few mistakes at least?  :P

Haberdashers. Had to look that up.

So yes, there's a Veritas shop nearby and that got me thinking, only 25m from that store is a crafts shop and lo and behold what I found on their site :
googly eyes. 10 for €0.90 in al sorts of sizes  :)
I'll go have a look tomorrow.

Thanks guys !

Don't use superglue, they'll fog up.

I used PVA on my Cobalts.

Oh bummer, seems the pad is too stupid to copy the url on a pic. Oh well see here

True, although I'll probably use epoxy glue.

Something else that might work if you can find them are the pop dome rubber toys that tend to be sold as party favors.
