Now that I am back from the States I have been tackling the terrain for this project.  I have sorted out the colour scheme for the desert, settling on Sandstone masonry paint with a little added texture created by dropping in some fine sand and ballast to the mix. The boards are ordered but in the meantime I needed to do something with the buildings.  Here is my first, a small dwelling.  I am quite happy with the colours but I think I need to add a little more to the base in the way of period setting.

The rest of the buildings are coming along and hopefully will be finished this weekend.

Looking good, Gary.
Very good.

I would always add a small amount of vegitation to the base, even if the real world says; 'No!'.
I think it adds to look of the model even if there really should not be any.
Aesthetics trumps all, in my opinion.

Looking good  :)

A simple awning above the door would work well also.

Thirded on all points :)

Looking forward to seeing this come to the tabletop and getting a game in. :)

Fine work on the texture and colors. Pitchers in front are a nice touch.

Thanks for the advice chaps.  I tend to agree with you, that despite being in the desert, there should be some vegetation around habitation.  I shall look into it.  As to the awning, I have some other houses with these planned, as well as some market stalls.

I hope to offer it as a game at BLAM next year (or a mini-BLAM if there is one planned between now and then). All welcome.

Funny you should mention mini BLAM. I refer you to the BLAM board ;)

Looks good I like the pots and wavy wall shape. Palm tree looks familiar I got some like that very cheaply postage free on ebay from China.

Great start to the building collection Gary, as others have said; a few tufts of vegetation around the base of the walls may give it that little extra that you're after.

Nice.  Improve the palm trees with a shot of some dull cote, though.  Even better, a spray or two of a different color green and maybe even a yellowish spray.  The the dull cote.  Will make a better impression - and photograph better.  But mask that nice building first!!!

Thanks for all the tips about vegetation and the palm trees.  I am working up a few ideas (and awaiting some light coloured tufts) so I should have an improved product in a couple of days.  In the meantime I have been painting some camels!!!

And don't forget major terrain projects when you construct "Fort Zoizante Neuf" to house your Legionnaires, and the "Oasis of El Nooki" for the Bedouins. ;)

"Carry On Up the Khyber" was always a particular favourite of mine, but loved "Follow that Camel" as well.
Enjoying the game is ALWAYS more important than winning the game.

Funny you should mention "Fort Zoizante Neuf". I am drawing up plans for it now.  The "Oasis El Nooki" is also on the cards along with some bedouin tents. Despite the silly nature of the film there are some excellent scenarios that can be played out.  The march to relieve the fort, the rescue of Lady Ponsonby and the attack on the fort will all feature as sceanrios in the game.
