SDS - Cossack rules
« on: October 28, 2014, 02:20:18 PM »
I have been painting up some of Perry Miniatures excellent Retreat from Moscow minis and the cossacks are next on the painting table.

I'm really looking forward to the 1812 White Death rules when they are published, but I want to try the Song of Drums and Shako rules in the meantime.

There are however only stats for mounted Cossacks and mounted Guard Cossacks, and I'm looking for more different type of cossacks. Has anyone got any suggestions or perhaps even tried to create a game similar to this?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

In Napoleonic era Cossacks fought mounted. Cossacks were superb infantry in 17th century, but only if we talk about Zaporozhian. Don, Kuban, Astrachan and Danaube Cossacks were almost exclusively cavalry force (but sometimes dismount). Later Zaporozhcy came under protection of Muscowite Tsars. They've lost their indenpendence but received some privileges in return for serving as soldiers and were often displaced.
I'm afraid you won't find any other options for Cossacks.

I have to go with Kadzik on this one.

It might be a case of figures being made to little purpose. In skirmish games Cossacks might dismount to pillage and the like, so for that figures might be needed, but otherwise they fight exclusively mounted. They were cavalry not 17C dragoons. I remember buying lots of Foundry dismounted hussars (SYW) thinking how useful they would be (Prussians being particularly short of light infantry). After doing some reading, and not being a skirmish gamer, I put them on ebay to cut my losses - they didn't dismount in field battles either.
