One big issue for me was that I had so many projects that were going no where because it was taking me a month to paint 5 minis at 28mm. With 15mm I paint a batch of 24 in about 3 hours - base coat, wash, quick highlight, flock and done. I'm very happy with them. I also find 28mm minis on a 6x4 table feels very crowded with little space.
Yes, one of the things that precipitated all this for me was me looking at all my unpainted Starship Troopers stuff.  I've wanted to do a bugs/aliens against humans game for years and years. I've even got actual rules (Swatters) But with the number of figures I'd like to do, 28mm takes up too much space, and takes too long to paint.  I've never gotten past painting one squad of marines and about 20 genestealer/xenomorphs.  Enough for skirmishes, but not an epic swarm battle.

I'd also likely end up playing solo, or  being the one introducing the game to a group of new players, so I'd have to have both sides painted.
So... Khurasan's Space Demons look like a pretty good option. But knowing that the Mongoose SST stuff is out of prduction, and the plastic figures will probably never come back, I decided to hold on to those for now. I do not want to find myself trying to re-buy those five years from now...  >:(
