Worst thing to come out of this Centenary business was the mauling of the song 'Green Fields of France', leaving out an essential verse and, frankly being all round terrible, some sort of Jazzy pop song.

Can't remember the name of the singer but it was done in partnership with the Royal British Legion as well.

If the Royal British Legion want a money spinner and a chance to do something for the British music industry then why not run a raffle where the winner gets to bludgeon James Blunt to death? Twenty quid a ticket, bound to be oversubscribed,

Come on James.... it's for a good cause. :)

I wonder if Aldi will be doing something similar? Maybe the sinking of the Lusitania? Or perhaps a promotion on Belgian chocolate and ersatz coffee?

Can you clarify which is the shameful episode? The truce? The ending of the truce?

I think he means the First World War in general not the truce itself.

Yeah I meant the entire war. Sorry, thought that was obvious.
Someone on Facebook said to me that they don't understand what my problem with it is. It's lovely.
Erm. Well that's the entire problem actually. That it's lovely.

so this whole bantering about political correctness of historical themes in advertising is wargaming related how?
I am certainly aware that it is impossible to keep everything "wargaming" but please.....

does everything have to slip into discussing british domestic policy?

As an aside, do they use historical events in any other country to advertise products?
'So do all who see such times. But that is not for us to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that we are given.'

well, in broad terms, You could regard historism and romanticism as "advertising"  the ideology of the good old days of the medieval period

gentlemen are entering perilous territory without a map.... ;)

I would have understood that evolution advert had it been about czech beer.....
I always thought Guiness was an irish supper dish they serve without a spoon......

besides, when it comes to fermented food, bees and ants have left us behind for a couple of million years already  ;)

And to think all those people died, so they could be used to sell stuff 100 years later, dosent seem worth it does it?

Any look at advertising will tell you that companies sold using the war as a backdrop whilst it was still in progress:

I get the thing with the adverts finally....thank you for all the examples.

My first thought on the Sainsbury Christmas ad was
" Great, making money with ww1 "

But maybe there is at least a glimpse of a good cause in it and you British havent forgotten and still remember ww1.

We Germans do not.
