It's 1mm foamed PVC, scribed with a steel scriber. The finer texture is from ropey sandpaper, the kind you get from a poundshop.  ;)

I've been banging on about foamed PVC for years now, I've simplified my enthusiasm to "It's foam core's older, sexier sister."  8)

Thanks, Phil. That looks great. I have mostly just used burnishing tools for working with PVC foam (it is a much sexier version of foam core), but it doesn't give really sharp lines. Looks like I need something between a burnishing tool and a needle point.

Thanks. I use something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-SCRIBE-Tool-Tungsten-Engineering-Point-Scriber-Sheet-Carbide-Metal/264503795756
I've picked up a couple, both slightly different. I have an artist chum who does silverpoint, but that's too expensive for me, another option is thin metal rod in a
pin vice which you can sharpen to suit.

Rapier Mongols finished. Left to right, Eight bases of light/medium cavalry, twelve bases of cavalry archers, eight bases of heavy cavalry. Four Command bases. Really sweet sculpts. 289 mini's done in one mind-numbing "block". Bag at a time from now on. 😉 Thanks to other Phil for the virtual painting sessions.

Fantastic mass effect, great job!

Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

Thanks folks. I went for the look of a charging mass, rather than having them in neat lines. Delhi Sultanate or Chinese to follow at some point.

Toy Hack Sci-fi Dropship
« Reply #399 on: June 14, 2021, 04:21:05 PM »
I've been looking for a suitable dropship for a while, typically to carry my two Colonial Marines APCs, and I'd had no luck finding a suitable model of the UD-4 "Cheyenne" Dropship.
I found a Hallmark Christmas tree ornament of the Star Trek DS9 Runaround "USS Rio Grande", available only in the US, and thought it would be perfect
It used to flash and make noises, but I soon put a stop to that.

The scale turned out to be perfect, but I preferred the wings around the other way, makes it look more aggressive.

It was going to need a rear door/ ramp and I dug one out of one of GZG's detailing kits

Added the door at the right angle and filled the void with putty.

Made a landing foot, to which I can attach with styrene rod.

Cast up the three I need.

Threw on some paint and a wash.

Picked out some panels in different colours...

...and started adding decals.

All decalled up, mainly Gundam and Fighting Pirannha decals

Added two guns and a missile launcher, and jobs a good 'un.

It's not a perfect hack, but plenty good enough for gaming. "We're in the pipe five by five"

Awesome conversion; it looks spot on 8)

The de-trekification of the ship worked really well too!

And who's to say the Colonial Marines only used the Cheyene as a ride, right? There's bound to be a plethora of ship types in use.

Now to name it... ;)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
