Dodge, they are looking great, Cavalry are a nightmare to paint. Its all that horseflesh, it seems like an eternity to get them done, but once they are on the tabletop they look splendid. Your project is really taking shape. :)

Thanks Mal,

Cavalry are hard

I find the riders hard because there is no firm base to stand them on and dowls or pens are tricky to get used to.

The horses are quick good to do,

I have based with scorched brown
second with bestial brown

then used either sepia wash or devlan mud depending on what you want.

i did one with chestnut ink which looked weird until it dried and looks well good.

its quite a quick and effective method.

I really need to do some gaming though, but still have buildings , forests hills rocks and fortress walls to finish and then we will be there  :P

If you want a firm base have you thought of gluing them on the horses before painting? That's what I do, and I find it much less of a hassle that way.

It feels like it should be harder, but I've always found it to be much less of a pain. Usually you need to do some filling to get the saddle and rider to join nicely anyway, and I'd hate to do that with an finished paint job and then have to get the paints out again. Better getting it over with at the start.

That's just my thoughts, feel free to ignore them (especially as I hardly ever paint horses, and keep putting them off).

Thats a good idea I'll do that on my next 4 due up in the painting queue soon.

Occasionally the riders arms, legs and such get in the way and create hard-to-reach spots, making painting slightly more challenging, but I feel the trade-off is worth it. But it's a personal thing, you have to go with what works for you. Can't hurt to give it a try, though.

I usually paint the horse first and finish off with the rider, if that's any help.

One advantage to attaching rider and horse together first is that you get a better bond ie metal to metal.
If you paint both separately you will be bonding them paint on paint which means there is a greater chance the two will become separated at some point, careless handling accidental knock overs etc.
As Plynkes says there id the disadvantage of the hard to reach places on the figure and horse. Its a trade off as usual.

The next four will be done that way to see how I get on, I'm using

Moss trio on the tunics

storm blue trio on the trousers

black boots

brown straps

and I'll look in the book for the shoulder boards

Any chance of slightly bigger pics, Dodge?   :)

I'd like to see that, too - judging from your Reaper highlanders, they should not lose anything by being seen close up  ;)

Did you use 30, 35, or 40 mm washers for the bases? (I have an obsession with washers at the moment, just ask CB  ;D  )

30mm

I bought them by accident when first buying washers for infantry and have now run out  :?

for some strange reason i like the round washers for horses quite a lot.
