Post Apoc vehicle combat rules?
« on: November 24, 2014, 08:35:28 AM »
Hi all, I have just finished converting up a bunch of old toy cars into some heavily armed and armoured vehicles of mass destruction. The only problem is that I now need a ruleset to play with them. So I am asking for recommendations, I see the kickstarter for Outriders but am wondering if there are others and which one is best.  Iwould prefer downloadable rulesets but am happy to order rulebooks if I need to. I have 8 vehicles ready to rumble so a ruleset where each player has one or 2 cars is the kind of thing I am going for.

hi
you could try Axles and Alloys , works well it's very similar to Full Thrust  and it's downloadable.

I'm a big Outrider player.  Very easy to understand the rules, with tons of strategy involved.  It's the best autocombat game I've come across, and I've played most of them.  I agree with Scurv that Machinas is also a nice game, but it's a little more of a 'Death Race' style game where Outrider is more Mad Max.

I think Thunder Tracks looks good, but it seems like someplace between Machinas, which I recall created in part from a chariot racing game, and Outrider where you freely plot movement with the cards.  In TT the cards are the track, so it becomes the game board.  Outrider allows for all manner of maneuvering that the other two dont.

May I suggest GorkaMorka? Suits perfectly in terms of number of vehicles, small groups and table size!

I guess its also a question of what you would prefer. Death race track combat or more open table driving. Minute vehicle customization or quick and dirty?

Totally agree, that's why I tried to break down the sub-catagories of games.  Wow, who ever thought PA Autoduel gaming was so complicated???

Axles and Alloys is FREE ,so you can down load it and give it a once over . It's simple enough for people to pick up in minutes and car design is pretty quick

Thanks for all the suggestions, I need to find the time now to download them and give them a test drive.
Axles and Alloys looks good, being free always helps so I might start with that one.
I downloaded the rules to Outrider but after printing them off they were hard to read and I didn't have the cards (I couldn't find them on the site) so I cant realy say I have tested it but from the little I have read it looks good.
I have and have played so much Gorka Morka. A great game, but the thruster mechanic that's integral to the game isn't something I like for non ork vehicles. Being a mechanic by trade and loving all the MAD MAX movies I would like to play something that feels more like them, or maybe Death Race (I know its heresy but I have only seen the Jason Statham one). So a game with more realistic vehicle movement than Gorka Morka I guess.

The Vehicles are on the painting table at the moment, so when they are painted I will show them off. maybe with an ARR.

I'd humbly suggest maybe checking out Road Rage. I usually run it at conventions doing the Statham version of Death Race with three laps.

There's a little bit of a learning curve to both getting the rules down and learning to drive under the rules. People have certainly enjoyed the game at conventions and the only gripe I usually hear is that the rules limit them to shooting once per five segment turn when they want to shoot every segment.
