Quick foam board question
« on: September 04, 2008, 12:30:07 PM »
Hi all,

I'm going to start building my own 28mm and 18mm buidings using foam boad. I'm wondering what thickness people use. There's a discount store near me offering masses of 5mm foam board at £7 a pop and I'm tempted to stock up.
Don't!

I use 5mm. 10mm boards are often just two 5mm boards stuck together. I have never seen boards thinner than 5mm.

5 mm is good for many purposes - and sturdy enough for most buildings. Go for it! It's cheap! I'm looking for a possibility to restock 5 mm foamboard myself, as I have only scraps left, not large enough for basing Streets of Mayhem  :(  - Only problem is, nearest store is about 100 km. away, and not open on saturdays, so I have to take a day off to go there...
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

The store where I buy the stuff has 3 mm. I've used some of it to build up cd-terrain-bases a bit (instead of cork, which I haven't found a good cheap supply of, yet...)

Yeah, 5mm is good. I've used 3mm on occasion and it warps too easily. Which is not to say the 5mm doesn't warp, it does, but not so much as to be a huge problem.

5mm for me. How big are the sheets you are looking at?

I use 5mm for most things. 3mm & 10mm only occasionally.

I've just bought some 5mm A1 sized sheets locally at £6 each.

Good to know 5mm is good for the job. The local store is selling 3 x A1 sheets for £7 as part of a clearance sale so looks like I'm getting a good deal.  That's something Argonor probably didn't want to hear  ;)

Ah, but it's good for the hobby, innit? And what's good for the hobby is good for me... I think.... I'm just happy that I found a place to buy the stuff after all in this godforsaken gaming-outback that's called Denmark...

Sometimes the supermarkets get rid of their display adverts that are mounted on foam board.  If you don't mind the gharish colours and odd shapes then ask.  Usually they are free.

Ideally infiltrate someone into the store so that you get early warning!
