Combat Zone/General SciFi scenery - Matakishi style!
« on: November 25, 2014, 11:52:39 AM »
Hi all,

Using the cardboard scenery in the Combat Zone box set as a template, I thought I'd have a go at Matakishi style corkboard upgrades.  This one is still WIP (the interior flooring isn't fully painted yet).  Obviously a lot grimmer than Matakishi's delightful and unique style, but I'm pretty happy with it and I think I can knock them out a hell of a lot quicker now I've sorted out the methods.

Cork board walls, Costa sticks for floorboards, crackle effect paint, MDF base, printed out Battlestar posters.

The fluff is basically standard near future stuff, this being in the 'wastelands' and remnants of the old pre-war humanity prior to the Mega-City style new settlements.  Feedback welcome!

Obviously, looks awesome.  Have often wondered about cork board as walls, though.  How sturdy is that stuff?  Seems like it would fall apart, or chip pretty easily, being moved around and used often.  Am I simply thinking of corkboard that is thinner than what you use for the building?  Does the spackle type covering strengthen it a bit?

Cork is pretty sturdy, at least the one I'm using on my own scenery.

Cheers for the kind word guys :)

The cork is actually tough and only gets strengthened the more you add to it - whether crossbeams right angle walls, and the lower border.  Additionally you have to use Flooring tiles cork as this (per Matakishi) is denser cork than other more crumbly types.  The cork tiles I found are also pre-sealed on one side with poly varnish so they are even sturdier (the only issue for some builds might be the texture difference).  I just worked around that for my building).  My plan is to sink some washers in the underside of the base for future carrying in magnetized boxes.

Another top tip is my local 99p store sells pots of Poly varnish for 99p - picked up loads of them.  a coat of that followed by matte varnish and they should be tough.

Here's Matakishi's essential guide to working with flooring cork tiles:
