28mm Zulus - uDududu Regiment
« on: December 16, 2014, 11:23:45 PM »
Part of the right horn at Isandlwana. I am now halfway to completing all the Zulu regiments that were present at that battle (as far as I can tell). I have another three regiments worth of figure then I have to wait until Black Tree have another sale.

I decided to stick to the Black Tree figures for my Zulus rather than get any other brands mostly because of cost (50% off and no postage on large orders was too tempting an offer to pass up) but also because the models themselves are really nice and it is pretty easy to get paint on them in large numbers. They can be a bit fiddly with all those shields having to be glued on and at least a third of the figures have to have weapons attached, but I think that the overall effect is pretty good.

Thanks for looking.

Dear Brian,

This may help you.  I wrote it is 2009.

I also wrote painting guides for Zulus and 1879 British.

Thanks Mick - I already have a copy of your work and that is where I am getting my shield designs from - in fact I have it on the desk in front of me as I type.  It is a great resource and I am taking every word in it as gospel  :)  I like it when someone else does the leg work. I hope to get the Zulu half of this project finished by the end of summer.

Another great looking Zulu unit Brian!  Partially due to all the Zulu units you keep posting I have decided to add a Natal unit to my British forces. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Fantastic resource you posted Mick.  I downloaded that back when I bought my Zulu set.  I have never seen much on the Natal auxiliaries shields though, were they generally individual with no unit designs?

I painted my first unit of NNC with a variety of shield designs.

As far as I can recall there was no system with the Natal Native Corps shields - therefore, I suggest that the are shown in mixed designs.  I think that the only consistent uniform was a red cloth, worn as either a headband or an armband or both.

The red cloth wasn't much of a uniform but simple enough to provide in the field.  Thanks for the replies and all the pictures Brian.
