German Allies
« on: December 06, 2014, 08:46:49 AM »
Does anyone out there know the uniform details for the Russians that served on the German side in the Stalingrad area. There are lost of reference to these units in books but I would like to know what their uniforms looked like so I can paint some.  As far as I can make out it was German in cut but what about colour and markings?

Thanks.

In late 42, I do not think there were organized pro German Russian Liberation Army formations or units.

I think you would be talking about individual PoW's used as "hiwis" - "Help Volunteers". They would still wear Russian uniforms.

Division "Von Shtumpfeld"

The division was formed in Stalingrad, December 12, 1942. In the Division were recruited Russian volunteers, Russian Cossack, Ukrainian and Russian
Police, who were in Stalingrad cauldron. Later in the Division took Russian defectors.

Armed Division was mainly Russian captured weapons. In order to strengthen antitank forces of the Division this included small units of the 9th Flak Division Luftwaffe.

Command staff to a level company commanders was directed from different Divisions and units of the Wehrmacht, which were surrounded. But later on the command positions were appointed former Russian officers. So in January 1943, the commander of Kamensky Battalion - is the former Red Army Major Tuhminov.

Division was completely destroyed in February 1943. When capitulated 6 Army. Part of this Division, took up defensive positions on the Tractor Factory, where it was completely destroyed in the first week of February 1943.

If you want, I can give a full list of the composition of this "Russian Division."

I do not have precise information about the uniform of this Division, but it was certainly a mixture of Soviet and German uniforms. Also in within this Division was a lot of Cossacks - they certainly wearing traditional subjects Cossack clothes to emphasize the their status.

Here are drawings of Russian volunteers in the Wehrmacht 1941-42.

Thanks Cuprum that's just what I was looking for. I have read of these units in A. Beavor's Stalingrad and other places too. I will start looking for some suitable figures in 20mm to model them.
