Deus Vult - Wars of the Roses AAR
« on: December 14, 2014, 11:38:42 AM »
Hi all,
The Devon Wargames Group held its Xmas Game at the club yesterday with a refight of the little known clash that happened in Devon during the Wars of the Roses.

This battle may hold the key to determining the unusual DNA discovered in the bones of King Richard III

If you would like to know more, then just follow the link to the club blog

Fantastic AAR.  Looks like you all had a great time.  I would be keen to get an idea of how the rules played out in a WotR setting.

Hi Hu Rhu,
Thanks for your comment.

The rules held up pretty well with the game keeping a good pace and most players able to get the rules running around the table. We were playing for fun and though not specific for the period gave a result and kept everyone entertained.

If I put a WoR collection together myself, I would probably use something like "A Coat of Steel " by the Perfect Captain which add more detail peculiar to the period, but might not be so good to play with 6 or 7 people on each side of the table.

I posted a more detailed report on a game recreating Hattin
http://jjwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/deus-vult-march-to-tiberius.html.
Again we had quite a few players and the game moved along very well with the period flavour reflected in the scenario. The fact that it worked well with players familiar, and less so, with the rules was a key factor in selecting them.
Hope that gives you a bit more info
Cheers
Jonathan

Funny enough "A Coat of Steel" is my preferred set of rules for this period.  I was just wondering if these offered anything better.  Actually given the activation method of ACOS it doesn't much matter how many players there are, although there is a small chance that some players get a little bored waiting for their ward to activate. However the treachery/lethargy rules help keep the tension in the game.

Not to hijack your thread, but it is nice to see Deus Vult being played. We really like these rules, give a very entertaining game for the Crusades, but I have to agree, A Coat of Steel is such a good set, really the best option for WOTR. I can't wait for the The Perfect Captain to bring out the 2nd edition.

Hi JG,
I agree. We chose Deus Vult as a game set that gives a good game for a lot of players which fitted the bill perfectly for what we wanted to do as a club. I have the Perfect Captain rules and think they really capture the specifics that makes WoR a particular period in medieval warfare, and would certainly be my first choice for it.
Cheers
