« on: September 09, 2008, 01:05:50 PM »
Just realized that Eureka does 28 mm 1864 Danes..... (from the 2nd Schleswig War)...

Should mix nicely with my ideas for some Victorian Weird Adventure... when I get there...

Dunno, yet... Should probably be based on naval steam-tech - we are a notorious sea-faring nation  lol - maybe supported by some balloons with propellers on the gondolas....

Animated battle bacon and icecream golems! lol *ducks away to escape just punishment for this terrible cliché joke*

Argonor, you are an evil Dane. Ever since I got a book on the battle of the Düppeler Schanzen (Slaget ved Dybbøl in Danish, if I´m not mistaken, if so, feel free to make fun of me) I wanted to game that war, but contented my self that I would not have to start it for lack of suitable figures...  ::)

I visited Dybbøl with my family just this last summer vacation (we had rented a cottage on Als, just 20 minutes drive away). 'Slaget ved Dybbøl' is quite right - but it was more like a siege and a storm of the 'Schanzen', I think...

Prussians and Austrians from the Prusso-Austrian War of 1866 and the Eureka Danes will do fine  ;)

And I had no idea that Denmark was closely associated with ice-cream.... I could understand if it was whip-cream (der Schlagsahne-Front), but ice... hmmm...

And I do not think we were one of the foremost pork-producing countries in Victorian times (try living here in the spring when all the pig-barons are spreading 'Gülle' on the fields  >:( ) - but steam-powered 'Gyllekanoner' could be fun  >:D

Probably because it was contemporary with the ACW...

We had 2 wars with Prussia/Germany over the duchies Schleswig and Holstein - formally both German states, but as the Danish king was the Duke, they de facto were part of Denmark. Some political trouble concerning the establishment of a Danish costitution led to the German part of the  population to fall out with the Danish part, and the Germans saw the duchies as part of Germany, they intervened.

The first war was known as the 3 Years War (1848-50), and we Danes boast that we won that. Actually, we won the Battle of Isted (and we have a monument to prove it  ;) ), and then Russia and Britain put diplomatic pressure on Prussia (they did not want Prussia to conquer Jutland, as it would mean Prussian control over the access to the Baltic).

The second war was a short, dirty affair, where Bismarck got Austria to participate in the invasion of Denmark that culminated in the Battle of Dybbøl. The Danes had muzzle-loaders and cannon from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, and the Germans used breachloaders and 'modern' artillery. (Just 2 years later, Bismarck crushed his former allies to establish sole Prussian control over Germany - leading to the German Union of 1871)

Prussia got control over South Jutland almost all the way to Kolding (the border was drawn along 'Kongeåen', a very small river.

56 years later, in 1920, after lots of Danes fighting and dying in the trenches on German side, the northern part of Schleswig by referendum returned to Denmark - what is called 'Genforeningen' (the Reunion) here.

I shall see what I can find online in English...

Yeah - I was wondering if I should mention that, but... though I'm a huge fan of GMF, I think that particular one is a rip-off of 'The Prisoner of Zenda' (in.. at?)

Now we're at it: Does anyona have an exhaustive list of the Flashman books..? I'm not sure I have them all (or that they were all translated into Danish).

There's a YahooGroup here:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/SchleswigWars/?yguid=201695851

Not much activity lately [in common with many yahoogroups] but has some good info and links.

There's also a Danish wargamers website;

http://www.krigsspil.dk/

Mostly in Danish, but I'm sure if you email them they can point you towards more sources of info.

Argonor, here's a pretty good list with cover pics and a note to say what each is about:

http://www.mykreeve.net/books/flashman/

It's not up to date, though. Hasn't got the last one, "Flashman on the March."
