The Sword & The Flame' by Larry V. Brom...

I've just ordered a set of these rules, anybody had any experience of 'em, are they any good? I'm planning on stiffening mi'upper lip, returning a few white feathers, taming the 'eathens and wotnot in the New Year... wot's the best ruleset for a dunderhead that plays all his games by the KISS principle?

Personally I think they are good set of rules and best played in the spirit you describe. More suitable for good sized skirmishes that big battles, but great fun.
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

Ahh that is a gem! Played it lots of times. A perfect set for entertaining games of loose historical accurateness and great cinematographic moments. And frustrating ones, of course, as your Cavalry refuse to charge or your Natives get wiped out by that last surviving Highlander. I love it.

If you do not know it already, check out the Wayback Machine version of Major-General Tremorden Redderring's Colonial Wargames page here http://web.archive.org/web/20060614041903/http://zeitcom.com/majgen/index.html whoch contains quite some tips.

Ditching the Wounded rules is something I regularly used and that speeds up the game quite nicely.

There is a Yahoo Group called ColonialWars where many TSATF addicts meet and discuss.

First set of rules I ever played, back in the mid 1980's. Still a good time for colonial skirmishes, IMO.

Enjoy!

Do you ignore wounds or count them as casualties?

Like a lot of other people it was my first historical set, and it's fun.

I curse the Major General's site, that guy got me to spend a LOT of money on African colonialism miniatures. :)

I couldn't be bothered with the wounded rules especially in larger games so whenever any figure was wounded we threw a d6 1-3 dead 4-6 carry on as normal. The other thing I'm not keen on is the Melee rules all that lining up and rolling for each fighting pair not my cup of tea I prefer Donnybrooks approach. One thing I will say for TSATF is that if you don't like something or want to add something the rules are very adaptable.

My all time favorite set of rules.
Started playing them in 1981.
Probably played some verison of the rules about 500 times.
Also check out the Sword in Africa, kind of S & F lite. Lots of fun.
And I agree with others, if you don't like something, change it.

One of the all time great sets of rules.  Good fun for Colonial games and just about any other period with a little tinkering.

Fundamentally good set of rules. Comparing TSATF with Triumph & Tragedy, I'd say that each has it's advantages and disadvantages. I particularly like a couple of the adaptations to TSATF that a friend of mine uses. One involves converting the "wounded" result of regular TSATF to "incapacitated" (important state if the Europeans are trying to prevent their incapacitated but living troops from falling into the hands of the natives) and having a lighter "wounded" state that allows the figure to fire and melee at a reduced ability. The other involves using firing of individual artillery shells, which can be off target with a  scatter die, and firing templates for ground or air bursts, with potential lethal results for all figures under the template.

See the Red Shadow pages for some inspiration:
