I highly recommend them.  They are fun and have a variety of variants for use with a variety.  You can't go wrong with the set.

Thanks Trooper, have you tried the rules, I'm wanting to kind of do the thing 'old school/toy soldier' style and wondered if the rules would kind of aid and abet mi' plans... Wot! Wot!!?

Are these rules primarily for 25/28mm?
Don't!

Originally designed with 25/28mm in mind, with individually based figures, but I've seen them used with 15s.

Very 'old school' and quite simple rules in many ways with some clunky mechanisms(the opposed dice rolls figure by figure for melee combat can go on forever' for example) but can be fun and readily adapted to different periods.

Another alternative if you want large scale 'heroic' colonial skirmishes in the same style with up to 100+ figures per side would be to adapt the 'Sharp Practice' rules.

Or use 800 Fighting Englishmen which is TS&TF for larger games

Loads of people like them and they have been adapted to a multitude of genres.

I used to play them quite a bit, but they are not my favorite rules. The adaptations stretch the rules too far, IMHO.

They're very old school, clunky and built around the standard 20 man units.

The wounded mechanic is a very important balancing factor. If you let the British player ignore wounded men (own or enemy), you are giving them a substantial boost. Likewise for the ammo rules.

It can be a bit disheartening to play as the natives, because the British are obviously the best at everything.

I don't think I've ever played a game of TSATF where the British were wiped out. If they lost, it was because they ran out of time to perform the mission they were supposed to be on.

I've gamed with friends the siege of the Residency/Kabul with the Guides being vastly outnumbered. Hugely enjoyable for all despite the historic result  ;)

Like most games, TS&TF works best with scenarios and not just shoot em ups ...

I also used the Malakand Field Force by Winston Churchill for inspiration for suitable small unit actions. The River War will do just as well  :)

Do the Zulius/Fuzzy Wuzzys/Bongo Bongo Warriors ever have a real chance of winning agin volley firing British Infantry using TS&TF ? We've fought Redcoats agin Zulus many times, it always seem to entail vast hordes of Zulu Impis being mown down, before they got any chance of wetting their spears!

:o :'( :o

Not really, and even if you do get to close combat you will discover that the redcoats are better at that too!

There is a sort of neat mechanic in TSATF with the open/close formation, but to exploit that you would need units that are good at shooting (to force open order) and units that are good in melee (to shatter redcoats in open order) -- but none of the native armies have both! So the redcoats just adopt the formation that is better against the current foe and never think twice about it.

Pathans with jezzails and Ghazis in Ambush ....  :D
Also clever use of terrain.

An alternative is the Death in the Dark Continent rules which are huge fun
