Taiping Rebellion painting assistance
« on: October 30, 2014, 01:16:41 AM »
Hello all, I'm starting a new project and have hit a wall with my references. I've got the Foundry 25mm Taiping Rebellion artillery crews and need some painting references for these.
I will default to a standard Chinese civilian type dress with red sash and headgear.
Can anyone with proper knowledge of this period provide some direction or assistance?
Cheers,
JB

Not much in the Osprey, except the red scarf and sash and frequently a red jacket.

The Taiping rebellion was very colourful, especially for the Chinese.

I'll have a look in the books I've got shortly and get back to you  :)

Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom has some good info on organization and equipment and may describe uniforms (can't remember). It's a good, detailed read of the whole civil war.

Right then, Generally very colourful troops with red being predominant (the vast majority of troops wore something red, head band, cummerbund, cloth tied around the arm etc).

Red jacket and black trousers seemed to be common and separate units would have a 'uniform' of sorts, getting more uniform later in the war. Square unit badges on tunics for the Taipings and round for the Imperials.

Hair was grown long all over the head, as opposed to pigtails and shaven crowns, and tied up with any number of different types of cloths, coming more predominantly red as the wars progressed.

Pretty much anything would go but stick to the above very loose rules and you can't go wrong  :)

There's obviously a lot more than that but I've only had chance for a cursory check.

cheers

James, Thank you for taking the time and effort to reply. It looks like standard Chinese dress code for the time period with red sashes and headgear.
Much appreciated.
Cheers,
JB

No worries  :)

I can go a bit more in depth if you like?

Don't forget the fun to be had with all the foreign powers that took part, a real eclectic mishmash of troops from all over the world wanting a bit of the action  :)

cheers

James,

I've only just begun to research this period. Years ago I've read about the Taku forts, but as of late I've started with the Ospry title and a few web articles. I'm a sponge and would love to hear any insight you may be able to provide.

Cheers,
JB

Here's a good image of Taiping troops which gives a useful idea of the mix of dress;

Regarding the figures, they will, with luck, be ready for the new year.

The plan is to release the first batch including basic Tai-Ping types alongside some EVA and Imperial infantry.  The figures are coming along nicely and hoping to get some molds made over the next month or so.

I'll attempt to keep you updated once the molds are done.

I'm also working on some flags as well so these will be ready at the same time.

 :)

Sounds really good! I'm interested in doing a Taiping project too. Please let us now what your website is or how we can purchase these nice figs! Thanks mate. Are you doing Jung or Yung Ying Imperials with turbans?
