Identify this Vehicle?
« on: December 29, 2014, 06:53:15 PM »
Greetings fellow forum denizens,

My father and I were looking through some of my Grandfather's old photos from North Africa the other day and we came across this photo:

I was wondering if anyone could help us identify this particular piece of kit? My guess is a a Humber Armoured Car of some sort, but I can't be sure. Any help would be mightily appreciated.

David

it's a Marmon Herrington mk II with a Italian Breda gun on top in stead of the usual weapons: a boys and bren gun.
It was a South-African armoured car that was also used by the British in the desert. The picture has been claimed as taken near Tobruk in 1941.

Thanks Johan,

That would make sense, my Grandfather was in 2 Special Service Battalion and was captured at the Fall of Tobruk.

We didn't know the provenance of the photo, it is just with a bunch of other newspaper clippings and stuff. But you seem to answered that one for us in one fell swoop.

Now all I need to do is build one of of these in 28mm with a Breda on top!

an other one ...  ;)
Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.

Company B would be your start point. They do a 1/56 Marmon Herrington MkII, the standard version. You could convert that or ask Brent whether he has any plans to do one of the customised versions himself.

Thanks Carlos and Lou,

I think I shall definitely be building on of these, even if it has to be a bit of a mish mash conversion. I managed to get hold of a little piece my Grandfather wrote many years after the war, just some memories. He specifically mentions that his armoured car had no turret and was used for recce purposes. Pretty cool in a wargamery sort of way.

The Mark III was also converted by the Free French , mostly with turret and French 25mm AT gun , but also with Solthurn AT Rifle, and Panzerbuchse 41 without turret .
Anything is better than the Boys AT rifle  :D

I dunno, many years ago I dined with a veteran of the 7th Division AIF who said they came in quite handy for sniping Vichy Frenchmen in Syria in 1941. Not the most accurate piece ever made but apparently the effect of a hit or even a close miss was quite satisfactory.
