28mm Space Opera-Style Sci Fi Sources
« on: January 01, 2015, 05:01:47 PM »
Hi all,

I've been back in the hobby a few months now, having had a couple of years off and have focussed on 15mm - just painting and converting a bit of what I fancy. Whilst I'm carrying on with some 15mm stuff (and doing some other stuff in 20mm) I've decided (partly prompted by the brilliant Five Parsecs from Home rules) to get together a range of interesting star port/Mos Eisley style sci figures I can work on one at a time.

I'd like to end up with a nice characterful and varied pool of minis to draw on for small narrative skirmishes. I'm also really trying to avoid 'grim-dark' style minis.

So, what's out there - here's my current shopping list!

The starting point will be these guys (and a few others) from Zombiesmith, I'll be ordering soon

http://www.zombiesmith.com/products/a7d12-january-travelers

I've just ordered Foundry's Sam Slade, who should be a great fit:

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/2000ad/2000ad-collection-4-bc2000ad004/

I think CP Models' Star Fleet'll be a great addition too

Some of the AE Bounty miniatures might work too, which ebay'll help with.

So what else am I missing? I should also mention that barely armed/civilians or people with side arms are preferable to big space soldiers with mega-blat-cannons...

Some of the Deadzone and Dreadball ranges by Mantic might work.

Antenocities have some suitable scenery and vehicles. They used to do nice Sci fi civilians but I think they are discontinued.

Some of the Dredd stuff by Warlord/Mongoose maybe?

That's great cheers - I actually think that with the right paintjob some of the Black Tree Dr. Who mini's might work too.

This guy with a converted more alien face would be great as an ambassador

And if you still want more, have a look at the Chronoscape minis from Reaper:

One of my favorite sources for obscure aliens is Pathfinder miniatures from Reaper. As long as they aren't sporting obvious metal armor or goofy fighting poses you can find some really weird stuff. For example...

This one is an expensive miniature, but it's a great big lump of pewter. Even a few of the magic users and clerics can be used in certain situations.

Thanks for those - there's some fantastic ones in there. I love this guy:

Couple of tweaks to make an alien monkey and to techify that thing in his hand and he'd be bang on as an artifact trader.

Jagannath, Have you considered the excellent Spacelords range re-released by Doug of EM4 fame?

There's a list here, along with how to order: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=71507.0

And there's a set of images in this thread here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=68351.0

Earther, I didn't know about that range - it's great, I'll definitely be adding some of those to the mix.
