There's been a few threads on these just lately, these are my take on them. Artizan and Crusader figures.

Nicely done, Jeff. Very inspiring to see the results of the same topic from other people.

That's the kind of painting I appreciate: sharp details but also great "readability". Well done !

Thank you for the kind comments, I do appreciate them. The standard of work on this site is always high and so when you get a pat on the back for something you have done it really does mean something.
I have a few more of these to do and I'll post them on this thread as I go along.

I have often looked at figures on this site and wondered how they were painted, and I have been asked by some people what paints I've used to paint these figures so here's a short tutorial.

The paras are painted in 3 phases.

Phase 1

Undercoat black
Paint the helmet, cuffs and neck scarf Vallejo 979 Dark Green.
Paint the smock Vallejo 914 Green Ochre.
Paint the trousers and water bottle Vallejo 921 English Uniform.
Paint the webbing, water bottle holder, straps, pouches, backpack and chinstrap Vallejo 277 Khaki.
Paint the wooden parts of the weapon and the entrenching tool GW XV88.
Paint the buttplate of the rifle gold and wash with brown ink (I used GW paints)
Paint the chin cup Coatdearms Horse tone brown (or any very dark brown will do).
Paint the face and hands GW Mournfang brown.

Phase 2

Drybrush the helmet netting with GW Deathworld Forest and then highlight the scarf and cuffs in the same colour, I painted little stripes on the cuffs to give them an elasticated look.
Highlight the smock with a mix of Green Ochre and white.
Paint the hands and face GW Bestigor flesh, leave lines around the face and eyes. Then mix the flesh colour with white and highlight the bridge of the nose and cheekbones.
Highlight the trousers and water bottle English Uniform and white mix.
Highlight all the areas painted Khaki with a mix of Khaki and white.
Paint the boots, hair and weapon metal, black grey (its a Vallejo colour but I cant remember the number).
Paint the wood grain on the rifle and entrenching tool handle a mix of XV88 and white.
Highlight the chin cup with a mix of dark brown and white.
Paint half of the scrim on the helmet flat earth leave the other half green.

Phase 3

Paint large areas of the smock with Vallejo Luftwaffe camouflage green then highlight this with Vallejo reactive green. Then paint similar sized areas Dark Brown and highlight that with Vallejo flat earth.

Varnish to taste.

I hope this is helpful to anyone who would like to have a go at painting this very popular British unit.

Let me just start by saying there are some real gentlemen on this forum. I've changed the photos above because I painted the rifles wrong. I painted them as if they were metal all along the top of the rifle when in fact the barrel of the 303 is encased in wood. I've altered the figures as suggested In a pm I received this morning.
The reason I'm kicking myself is because I've had a lot of training with the 303 as a cadet I entered competitions at Bisley firing the bloody thing, and later in life on a specialist course in the Army I again received training regarding this weapon and many foreign weapons that we may come across on a potential battlefield. So I should have known what one bleeding well looked like!!
My only defence is that was some 40 years ago and I've clearly painted to many figures with muskets since then lol.
I believe the modern saying is "My bad" and I again thank the person who took the time to pm me with the information and the very polite and friendly way he did it.

You're not the first Jeff, and certainly won't be the last.   :)

I'm guilty of the same fault myself hence the comment above.

Really nice painting on the figures anyway.  :D
