Advice sought: Paris
« on: January 08, 2015, 11:06:12 AM »
Greetings all,

I hope that this post is in line with the general tenor of this board, I certainly fell that it is appropriate.

Visiting Paris later this month, get there Friday and then back on the Monday. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for an ardent wargamer of sites to see?

Thus far I am planning on visiting the Musee de L'Armee complex, but I was wondering if there are any gems which forum members might like to suggest. I enjoy the broad span of history, so even if it is a little niche, that is fine by me. Equally, if you are aware of any interesting, and not so famous landmarks, that would be grand too. First time in Paris, so all advice will be appreciated, even if it is for a wing of the Louvre or a particular exhibition.

Oh and naturally gastronomic advice will be gladly received too ;)

David

If you have time you should try here:

Musée des Plans-Reliefs – Hôtel National des Invalides

http://www.museedesplansreliefs.culture.fr/

It's in the Musee de L'Armee, but I thonk you need a different ticket...

I would add:=
The Catacombs (especially for Pulp Alley etc.);
The Boulevard San Michelle (look for the plaques in honour of the French who died in the liberation of Paris in WW2);
Sacre Coeur Church ( Built as an atonement for losing the Franco-Prussian War. Great views of Paris laid out below you.);
The Arc De Triomph (go inside & up it. A little display about when the Germans marched around it , again WW2)and
The Latin Quarter, for lots & lots of quirky bookshops. I picked up a great book of pictures from the collection of Hienz Goodarian. Text in French, but lots of pictures.
Sorry for any mis=spellings but books not with me at the moment.

hello :
For Figurine you have two shops :

Starplayer At metro Maubert-Mutualité, near the Quartier Latin with all the comics, Manga, BD book and goodies stores
the Ludikbazar Rue Messonier.

For Military history : Le musée de l'Armée, with the beautifull collection of Empire and médieval. And the plan relief (great as thebinmann said) And you have also the Napoleon Tomb.
Le musée de Cluny, Médieval art museum

For PULP : you can also go visit the Musée du quai branly for Primitive art : one of the biggest collection of american indian, african and aceanic art. There is a good exposition of Mayan art

You can also visit the musée de la chasse (Hunt museum) With a great collection of old guns (see the african guns made with bike tube)

after you can go visit the cité de l'architecture with a lot of exemples of french architecture elements or the Musée Guimet (Asian art)

I second this.  Awesome collection of scale models (most 1/300) of French fortifications (in France and abroad) made for training officers.  I took my wife on our honeymoon and she was impressed too!

Wow!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I fear I will not have nearly enough time, though I am sure I can make a second visit if needed.

The Musee des Plans-Relief is on the same ticket as the Musee de L'Armee, so its a two-fer.

I'll have to liaise with my travelling companion and hash out a pretty tight itinerary.

Thank you again for all the excellent suggestions, now to do some convincing...

David
